OK, figured it out. Hard reset on the iPhone (holding down the home and sleep/wake button until the Apple logo displays) fixed it. See here for more info, related to control center: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23080649#23080649%2323080649

OK, I'm stumped here. Same problem and tried the "forget device" technique from my iphone 5 and "delete" device from the headunit. No change to behavior. Can only control media playback from the music app. No response from the headunit or the new control center on the lock screen.
