I just got an AVIC-F700BT and here is my impression

Recommended Posts

I've read up alot on this forum before I got my F700, and so I was rather aware of and expecting issues. I got it installed by a Pioneer dealer because I'm a noob when it comes to stuff like that.

My overall impression is actually very positive, however. Everything that works, works well. I am currently using Data Discs as my main source of music, and they boot up quickly, play in the proper order (as apposed to alphabetical), and have full tag support. The nav works well too. Sure the no Up-Facing 2D mode is stupid, but i like the 3D for routing anyway. And If you're in a city, the zoomed out, near-vertical 3D Up view works almost as well. Bluetooth also works, with the mic wired into where the Factory Bluetooth mic would be on my 07 Altima. Call quality is clear on both sides, and it recognizes my phone (usually) and has my contacts in pretty quickly. I like that if I'm on a phone call on the phone before it is synched, but after it synchs up it actually transfers it to the car. Some would probably think thats annoying, and it is a bit jarring occasionall, but I think its nice.

But there are things that don't work. The usb interface...pretty much at all. Which is the major part of the Unit, so I'm going to take it back to the dealer and see what they can do for me. The iPod connected and I could browse it, but no audio would play. I think this is because I don't have the pioneer iPod cable, I used just an Apple one. Everything was alphabetical though. Artist, Song, and Playlists. I will still attribute this to me not using the official cable, so lets just wait for that. I then tried a Cruzer Micro 2G flash drive, and it just froze the system. When the thumb drive was plugged in, it became unresponsive to touch or button input. When the thumb drive was removed, it worked just fine.

I've only experimented with my iPod and Thumb drive once because I've been too busy to really fiddle with it, and i've been plenty satisfied by the Data Disc capability anyway. But I do want to get this fixed. I'm going to get the pioneer cable because I think that will fix the no-audio problem I had with my ipod, but it will still probably sort my songs alphabetically until there is a firmware update. I really wanted to get the usb Interface working though, because I wanted to get a portable hard-drive and organize my files my self. I don't use Voice Recognition, I don't particularly like it as a feature, I don't like to talk to my car, but I haven't gotten mine to work either way. I turned off the VR setting to see if that would improve the boot time (i think it did), but I turned it back on, and I still can't get any recognition for my contacts list. That may be because I haven't set it up right though, so I am not blaming the unit...and I don't really care.

Boot time is about 1:30 for the unit to be fully functioning (i.e. I can enter a navigation route), but the music comes on in about 10-20 seconds, so it doesn't really bother me. The predictive text and easy route entry makes it possible for me to enter a route at a stop light anyway.

I also assume Pioneer is going to release a Firmware fix that fixes all the problems, so Im going to stick with the unit, so far I give it about a 4 out of 7
