How can a GPS be tracked?

Recommended Posts

I sent this question to Pioneer but haven't received a response in 3 weeks. With these units being GPSs, can't they be tracked if we know the serial number or something? I know some trucking companies use GPSs to track all of their trucks, so this must be possible.

It would be great to have access to an application that would pinpoint the general location of the AVIC...not to mention the a$$hole that broke into the vehicle.

Any thoughts?

This is not possible. The AVIC has no ability to transmit data. The GPS antenna is "receive only".

The first part of GPS tracking requires an antenna to receive position data. The AVIC obviously does this. The 2nd part requires a device to wirelessly transmit this position to a central location. The AVIC CANNOT do this.

This is why you can track cellphones and cars with OnStar. It's also the basic premise behind Lojack. They relay their position via cellular transmission to a central location.

lol a guest telling someone they are incorrect. log in and maybe your word would stand for something, but no you guest are wrong, its a sat receiver

NOT A SAT SENDER OR TRANSMITTER.

Get your facts right then you can advise. It is very similar to the way DTV works... it receives the signal and correlates that on the screen for you in a positioning way... That is why DTV is not able to tell who was stealing their programming with hacked cards..

THERE IS NO LINKING UP ON POWER UP OR ANYTHING ELSE, it only gets a signal to process and display on the avic's... it is not a 2 way communication

You sir, are COMPLETELY incorrect. Heres the real 411 on this. Although its not very much data, your GPS reciever does transmit a small amount of data when it links up on powerup.
I'm with you on this tillithz. Guest here does not know what they are talking about. The GPS antenna is receive only. Not only is it not powerful enough, it does not use a parabolic reflector to focus the power. What kind of data would it need to transmit? It also makes you look like a bigger fool when you feel very confident and write "COMPLETELY" in all caps.
The serial# is the locator to the GPS! Once you register the unit with pioneer they have that serial# to track it! Dont set your unit up with a password cause then a crook can not master reset the unit an NO I say again NO finding it genius! 8)
Uh, no?
