GM XM ANTENNA REPLACEMENT

I have a 2005 Silverado with factory installed XM radio, and the antenna is located on the roof like everyone else.

 

The problem I'm having is when I load my Lance camper on to my truck, I basically loose my XM reception because the forward overhang of the camper over the cab blocks all reception.

 

I purchased an aftermarket XM antenna from BestBuy but cannot connect it to the factory XM tuner unit as the antenna male plastic connector and the tuner plastic female receptical connectors are not compatable.

 

I stopped by one stereo shop in town and the installer said that I was out of luck as there is no aftermarket antenna that will plug into the factory GM receiver. I even called Crutchfield, and the tech there said basically the same thing....

 

HELP!!! This seemingly simple project is turning into a giant PITA!!!!

 

All I want to do is disconnect the factory antenna from the tuner, and replace it with an aftermarket unit that I can locate towards the front of my truck to improve signal reception.

 

Is there an adapter out there somewhere that will allow this??

If you want to use an aftermarket XM antenna, you'll likely need to remove the plastic around the factory antenna input. I've used the factory antenna on aftermarket XM units by removing the plastic casing so it will plug in, but not the other way around. You could either disassemble the unit and remove it or just cut the plastic away w/ some cutters.

Thanks for your response. Carving up that plastic casing sounds pretty "tricky" and a disaster in the making IF my carving skills fail!!

 

I've been giving it some more thought and was wondering IF the solution might be working from antenna end of the factory setup.

 

I was wondering IF I disconnected the factory antenna #6 from wiring harness #5 ...could I then make the new antenna connection there and then run the antenna forward as needed??

 

I guess it all boils down to the type of connection on the end of the wiring harness #6....

 

ANYONE know?

Perhaps if you included clear photos of the actual, specific connectors and antennas you have to connect we could be of more assistance? Can't really tell anything from the auto part drawing you attached...
