GPS/XM antenna

Recommended Posts

You will have NO problems mounted any GPS antenna under the dash, with no metal above it. The GPS network of satellites will always allow for multiple satellites to be locked on when traveling in any direction.
However, XM has only two satellites, one approx. over AL/GA, the other approx. over NM/AZ. So, if you mounted the XM antenna under the dash, and you were going north when north of the satellites, the direct line from the metal of the roof might cause a problem. Same primarily goes for Sirius.
However, if you are in a urban area, both XM and Sirius have ground repeaters that you can pick up on.

Small note....there are 3 satellites for Sirius and instead of being stationary the three rotate around the earth. Two are always above the US and the third is around the other side of the earth. This makes under dash Sirius antennas even more susceptible to fading reception, at least in my experience.

Actually, Sirius uses no dedicated satellites, instead they rent bandwidth from other telecommunication companies' satellites. They also use terrestrial repeaters much more than XM. XM owns the 2 largest privately owned satellites ever put into orbit, Rock and Roll, and they sit over Maine and San Diego. The amount of badwidth available to XM because of this is staggering. We aren't too far away from mobile broadband internet or video on demand through XM services. I can't wait for the future, with flying cars and all.
