AVIC Z110BT/Z120BT Bypass Instructions

Recommended Posts

Ok, ladies & gents, who wants to bypass their AVIC-Z110BT or AVIC-Z120BT? I'll sell it to you for $1,000,000.00. Bwahhahaha! Just joking!

Unlike some of the folks who would screw us outta our dollars, here it is, in all its glory.

Step 1:

Take the MUTE wire, and move exactly one position over. Its located on the AV harness.

Step 2:

Then, as before, take that wire and tie it & and the unit's green parking brake wire to ground.

Step 3:

Enjoy your Z to its fullest potential!

Special thanks to "daddy" who helped me out on figuring out how to pull the pins. And of course, this was the 5th of 7 open pins that I tried before I hit the gold-mine...but well worth the effort!

BTW, I used a super small jewelers screwdriver to pop it out, made it fairly easy, but still takes some effort. A heavy gauge staple (not the paper kind) would work also, but you're probably going to draw blood that way! :D

I've only tested to 45MPH since everything was still loose in my car, but I think we're good to go.

After unsuccessfully trying the relay method, I have completed the above 'new' steps of moving the mute wire and grounding it with the parking brake wire. I still get the message, and have confirmed ground at both the mute lead on it's harness, and the pb lead on it's harness. Do I need to somehow reset the whole unit? I figured removing it from the car (no power) would have been sufficient.

Alaska,

Hey, you do NOT have to do any sort of reset. I did not do one, and I've been running 2 days with no problem. Double & triple check your connections, that's most likely the issue. Also, the pins are small and in there tight on the white connector. Did you move the mute wire over one, or did you pull a pin from a different harness? I made the mistake initially of trying to stick in a pin from a D3 harness, and although it looked like it fit, it actually was not fit correctly (too big to go all the way in) and was a source of problem. You MUST use one of the wires that the harness comes with to guarantee that this works.

Keep us in the loop with what you find out.

my mute wire is in the stock location and attached to the brown line from the gmos04 so there is no way it can be moved over as that pin location is being used. im trying to stop the radio from shutting off when using the phone/onstar

If you are using the MUTE wire, you'll have to pull one of the other pin-wires out and use that. I suggest moving the MUTE wire since most people do not use it. It really doesn't matter as long as the new pin location is tied to the PB & ground.

i found that the wire that was in the #2 location for the grounded mute wire wasnt grounded good enough. re-crimped the connector at the ground bolt and now the radio doesnt turn off. now i just have to fugre out where this whine in the upper dash speakers is coming from which wasnt there before so out come the radio again. :(

I've checked all my wiring, and both the PB wire and relocated mute wire are seeing ground. Question: Does everyone have their VSS hooked up? I have noticed that If I unplug the VSS, I get no error message, however if I leave it connected, it freaks out at me as soon as I go over 5mph. Also, my PB wire and relocated Mute wire both go to different grounds...do they need to be tied together and go to the same one? I didn't think this would matter, but then again...haha

Yes the VSS wire is connected. Also all of my grounds are common on one found "harness" that I made. I can recall having issues with separate grounds in a D3 install a few years ago so that might be smething you can try.

I finally got it to work! Turns out both my grounds were good, but the pin was not making a connection with the harness. After fighting with it for a while, I finally was able to get a good connection between the relocated mute wire and it's associated pin. Thanks again!

rtonerii, you shouldn't see an error message at all if this is done correctly.

dbnichols,

Can you tell me what I should see when it works correctly?

I have a warning screen when my system boots up telling me that something is not configured correctly. Is that what I should always see?

Nope, you should see no configuration error screen. If so, something is not hooked up right. I've been driving mine for days with no problem...hit 152MPH today, and a music video was playing on the screen (had to test it, right?)

Alaska,

I had the same problem at first...I tried to use a spare pin from an old D3 harness. It felt like it was working when I pushed it in, but it was NOT. Those pins in the new unit are TINY..obviously assembled by elves.

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't remember by Z2 harness pins being so small, but that was a year and a half ago.

One piece of advice I can give to others before you go getting frustrated with the size of the pins and the tiny holes in the harness.

1. Lift the "plate" on the bottom of the harness connector that runs perpendicular to all the wires (hold it there by stuffing a sewing pin in one of the holes (in line with the wires)

2. using needlenose pliers (to avoid getting bloody), push the eye end a small sewing needle into the slot just below the pin till it seats

3. If the sewing needle is the right size, you will have no problem removing the pin from the harness. If it is the wrong size, then you will end up ruining your harness or getting frustrated, or both.

happy modding.

I'd like to add my thanks for the instructions, they worked great! I just installed my Z110BT in my 2008 Chevy Avalanche LTZ, and I'm absolutely loving it! I also replaced the speakers in the doors, and added a JL Audio HD600 amp. Unreal system now......I'm going go post some pictures in the General forum so others can see the installation, if I can figure out how to post pics!
