Velcro Free Fake Face Plate **with PICs**

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the idea to hack up a factory radio to create a fake face plate. I found a radio at a local salvage yard (paid $5.00). First I shaved off the face plate and super glued all the buttons back on. Then I cut a right angle bracket with a 1 inch lip into the top of the AVIC. The metal plate fits perfectly in the crack between the AVIC face and the body. Finished it off with electrical tape around the edge. In a dark parking lot, theives will not look twice!

OK, check it out . . .

That is AWESOME!! You have given me faith in buying a new AVIC! My last one was broken by some would-be theives after 2 weeks and I was hesitant on getting another one since it seems to make me a good target.

Good thing with my car, The face of my stock radio can be removed pretty easily and fits snug in the opening due to a rubber gasket.

Cool idea, but if that factory CD radio worked, I would sell it for $50-100 on eBay and use the proceeds to buy a radio-only unit (profit $40-90). The CD radios aren't high dollar, but they go for pretty decent prices. That, and one that's a tuner-only will have nearly zero resale value so it would be less appealing to thieves than a CD player. Factory CD players don't get stolen that often, but they do get stolen.

Awesome! Thanks GSDaddy... you just relieved my only worry about getting an avic. I'm ordering a broken factory stereo off eBay along with my Avic-D1.

Do you have a screen protector on your unit to prevent the fake-plate from scratching your screen?

Anyone know of any factory-looking double din stereos with removable face plates?... seems like it would be a lot easier.

Why not just put a blank over it? They could try to steal the decoy!

Yeah, that was my point, I wouldn't have used a CD player as a decoy because they're still worth something, even factory ones. In fact, a 10yr old factory CD player is worth more than a 10yr old aftermarket CD player.

I would use the face off one of those radio-only units. Surely nobody steals those!

Well, besides getting super glue on the screen and putting numbers in reverse order, I think it turned out pretty well. If I was a thief, I definitely would not want to steal this POS stereo without CD or cassette.

We'll see how well it works since I live in downtown New Orleans right now :D
