Does any universal backup camera work on the avh series?

any camera with a standard RCA video connection will work fine, you just have to make sure to get the right video signal for where you live

on the avh-p4200 there is a brown connector for the rear view camera. and I see a few that only comes in yellow and red wires. I am currently using the video input for my phone which has video out. So I can't use that. Any idea?

Any camera advertised as a back up cam will work. And are you saying you'er using the back up cam input for your phone?

the brown RCA connector is for the video camera input, however most cameras outputs will be a yellow connector (pioneer only uses brown to differentiate between that and normal video inputs ) if the camera has yellow AND red or white the the camera also has a mic for sound that pioneer doesn't support (the camera will still work, you just dont plug the mic connector into anything)

I installed a generic backup cam and it works great off the reverse signal. the only problem is on my 4200 I don't have the rear view button to view the cam when not in reverse. I see it shown in the manual and in demo mode but can't get it to appear for my, any suggestions? I am using the R/C (brown) connection

A seperate auxillary power feed.

I didnt see anywhere that stated the power needed to come from the deck?

Yes it is, and the camera does work properly when the vehicle is reverse... I just don't get the option to view the camera at any other time. I do not get the rear off/on button and when I select the camera icon I only get Video/Ipod/SD for options.
