AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Upgrade to AVIC Z3 w/2010 Maps

Recommended Posts

This is an updated version of AFMagnum's 2009 upgrade post.

NOTICE: This upgrade is not for beginners.

The process involves opening your computer and connecting your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 hard drive to your computer motherboard. If you are not comfortable with this, do not attempt it.

Alternative: Purchase a pre-loaded drive from garrettoomey - http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/12766-fs-z1-z2-z3-30gb-and-60gb-hard-drives-2010-maps

Great news! We now have a way to update the maps and software on our AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3s to make them AVIC Z3s with 2010 maps. Please follow the instructions below but remember this is not a forum on how to setup bittorrent software or newsgroups. Please use Google or follow the links below for more information on those subjects.

Things to know before you begin:

1. You need to spend money: $50 if you want to save the data on your current Z1/Z2 drive, or around $12 if you don't care about the data. If you use the Service Test Disc (available in link below), then you will save $5 to $45.

2. You may need to load new software.

3. This process is not fool proof. You could render your AVIC Z1/Z2 unusable without completing the steps properly. You are implementing this update at your own risk.

4. Pioneer does not approve of this process. Again, you are implementing this update at your own risk.

STEP 0 - Software Installation and Hardware Purchase

A. Download and install WinRAR (or similar archiver):

http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar390.exe

B. Download and install the 15-day trial of Acronis True Image Home 2010:

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/link/?TrueImage2010_d_en.exe

C. Download Magic Boot Disk from HDDGURU:

http://hddguru.com/download/software/Magic-Boot-Disk/Magic_Boot_Floppy_Creator_v2.0.exe

D. Download, install and purchase one-time license for AFF Repair Station ($42.37) if you want to keep the data on your current drive:

http://www.hdd-tools.com/products/rrs/licenses/rs-avic411.html

OR

Download, install and purchase one-time license for HDD Unlock Wizard ($4.97 for a 40Gb Drive) if you don't care about the data on your current drive:

http://www.hddunlock.com/purchase/

OR

Download, burn, and use the Service Test Disk as instructed here: http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/30763-hdd-unlocking-free/'>http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/30763-hdd-unlocking-free/

E. Purchase a Laptop 2.5" to Desktop 3.5" IDE Hard Drive Adapter Converter (I picked mine up at CompUSA for $6.99): http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2329310&CatId=470

STEP 1 - Download The AVIC Z3 w/2010 Maps Hard Drive Image

Option 1 (thanks garrettoomey):

DO NOT POST OR SHARE THIS OUTSIDE OF AVIC411.

You can download the torrent file here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?bas8so8y0saaqt7

The file you download above will give your torrent client the information it needs to download the image.

Torrent is file sharing, so if you download the 8.44gb file, you need to commit to uploading atleast 8.44gb. If you are not willing or able to seed it, then DON'T download it. That is the only way to make it work. It will probably take a couple of days to DL and a couple of weeks to UL.

STEP 2 - Remove The Hard Drive From Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3

(For more information on this step, refer to Z1 HDD FAQ: http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/663-z1-z2-and-z3-hdd-faq/)

Power up your Z1/Z2/Z3, power tilt your screen all the way down like you are going to insert a CD then turn off the power to the unit (turn off the key in your car). The hard drive is located beneath the CD slot. The screw size it T8 torx. Lay a soft cloth on the touch screen to protect it from you. Loosen the 2 torx screws and remove the plastic cover trying not to drop it on the screen. Don't drop your screwdriver either. Set this aside. The screws are locked into the cover so you should not have a problem with losing them but don't take chances. The hard drive sits in a metal tray that slides in/out of the opening you just revealed. There is a flexible plastic tab that you can grab with your fingers and pull. The drive will slide out. It fits snuggly but doesn't require much effort to remove. Turn the drive over and set it on your desk, counter, whatever but use one of those soft cloths (I believe in being nice to this drive since without it I have a very expensive doorstop). There are 4 #1 phillips head screws. Remove them carefully. Do not crush the drive. Do not squeeze the drive with your fingers in the center; you can kill it this way. These are fragile to physical pressure (all laptop drives are). Always handle the drive from the sides. Instructions curtsey of Pulp_Fiction

STEP 3 - Connect Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive To Your PC

Power off your PC and connect your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 hard drive as the master drive on your secondary IDE channel using the IDE Hard Drive Adapter. Make sure there are no other devices on this channel. Power on your PC.

STEP 4 - Unlock Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive

To Save Your Data: Follow the instructions from A FF Repair Station, <!-- m -->http://www.hdd-tools.com/products/rrs/howto/<!-- m --> to unlock your drive. Once you create a log-in, the process is automated. You will need your unlock code at this point, so if you haven't purchased a license from the link above, do so now.

If you don't care about your data: Use HDD Unlock Wizard, <!-- m -->http://www.hddunlock.com/<!-- m --> to unlock your drive. You will need your unlock code at this point, so if you haven't purchased a license from the link above, do so now.

A new option to unlock your drive is FREE and uses the Service Test Disc. See this thread: http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/30763-hdd-unlocking-free/

STEP 5 - Disable the Security Lock on Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive

(This step is optional but highly recommended. If you fail to disable the lock and need to pull your drive from your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 again, you will have to pay another $42.37 to unlock it.)

Create a boot disk using the Magic Boot Disk link from HDD GURU above. Follow Pulp_Fiction's directions for disabling security under the question, Q: How do I disable the lock on my HDD here: <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=728">viewtopic.php?t=728</a><!-- l -->

STEP 6 - Create a Backup of Your Current AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive

Use Acronis True Image Home 2010 to create a backup image of your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 hard drive. This step is optional but good practice incase you have problems later on.

STEP 7 - Restore the AVIC Z3 Image to Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive

Use Acronis True Image Home 2010 to restore the .tib file (unrar first if needed) to your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 hard drive.

Alternative: you may restore only the LDATA and SDATA partitions leaving your personal data (USER) and stored music (MSV) intact.

STEP 8 - (Optional) Remove Copyright Data on Bootup

Complete the following if you don't like seeing the copyright data when your system boots up: Navigate to the BGCOPYRIGHT folder on the LDATA partition of your AVIC hard drive. Rename the CPYCUSTOM.BMP and CPYDEFAULT.BMP to CPYCUSTOM.BMP.temp and CPYDEFAULT.BMP.temp.

STEP 9 - Install AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3 Hard Drive Back Into Your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3

Reverse the instructions for Step 2. Once installed, power on your AVIC Z1/Z2/Z3. You will see something along the lines of updating the system. Then it will reboot and everything will be a factory fresh AVIC Z3 w/2010 Maps!

Acronis True Image Home 2010

Not sure how much this really matters but...

When I follow the pdf instructions for using Acronis 2010 the screenshots are different than what Acronis is allowing me to do. I suspect Garrets screenshots are from a previous version of Acronis.

As an example;

I cannot get it to make 0 fresspace before... and after...it only allows me to do this before.

I do not have the option to NOT assign a drive letter...I can pick AUTO or various letters...but not NO LETTER.

Will it work to simply restore all partitions to the drive at one time vs individually?

The instructions show it being done partition by partition.

Any help is appreciated!

For the record, I have had success with mirroring and rewriting my AVID-HD3 using HDCLONE http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html

It easily resizes the music partition and will save the image files easily.

The main advantage of it is that it is free for people to download (albeit speed crippled) and very easy for non technical people to operate. Comes as a bootable CD image too and I have used it with usb-ide converters perfectly.

I can see where my confusion is...Acronis 2010 vs 10.0.

Step 7 in the instructions indicate "Acronis True Image Home 2010" and the pdf shows the screenshots from "Acronis True Image Home 10.0". I just couldn't figure out why those screenshots looked so different from what I was seeing...assuming I was using the same software version that the pdfs were showing...but they weren't.

It does look like the 2010 version does not by default allow 0 space before and 0 space after. As well it does not seem to allow you to NOT assign a drive letter...by default.

I may search for an older version if i have any trouble with the newer version of Acronis.

Thanks Garrett!
