fl200960
in my 1999 toyota land cruiser, i'm using the metra 70-8112 harness. i did the mute pin bypass and hooked the newly positioned mute pin and the parking brake to ground. i hooked the yellow constant 12 v from the metra harness to yellow wire on the x920-bt power cord, and from the red accessory switch wire from the metra to the red wire on the power cord. i also tied the amp and antenna wires from the metra to the blu/white wire on the power cord. i tested the unit first to make sure that the unit works - and it does. the problem i'm having is that the unit powers up with the key in the off position, and the radio works. when i turn the key to the acc position, the auto antenna flips up, and it flips back down when i turn the key off. however the radio is still running. this looks like i mis-wired the red acc and yellow constant wires. before i do flip them and lose a little bit more wire, i just wanted sure that i'm troubleshooting this correctly. could anything else be wrong? 1loudls
get a meter and actually check the voltages on the wires, the yellow wire should have 12v all the time, the red wire should only have 12v when the key is turned to the ACC or ignition position and the blue wire should only have 12v when the radio is on. if there is any differences with these wires, then there is a problem with the cars or the harnesses wiring, if it is all correct there may be a problem with your unit
fl200960
i checked the voltages on the red and yellow wires before sending this post and they behave as they should. i haven't checked the blue wire but will do so. i'll call the harness mfg to double check for any problems. if i have to return the unit to amazon, how should i deal with the bypass modified power harness? also is it common for these units to be defective? I've wondered that question myself - figured it would be best to test everything BUT the bypass first, and then when happy, do the hack
fl200960
i called metra to see if maybe it was miswired or if they had any bulletins on vehicles and/or head units. the technician said to check voltages on the accessory red and constant yellow wires before and after the key switch. he also said that after removing the key and if the radio stayed on, i should open the door and check the voltage again on the accessory wire in case the car had that power retention feature. my car didn't, but the power windows worked that way. lastly, he wanted to verify their harness wiring that the pins were in the correct locations. after i got home, i went to try out those suggestions just so i can eliminate all the possibilities before attempting to call pioneer and/or returning it to amazon. with the power harness hooked up and without the key in the ignition, the radio powered on as it did before. i checked the voltage on the yellow wire - 12v. i next checked the red wire. initially it read 12v but then dropped to 0v and the radio shut off. the radio turned on again after i removed the probe. i removed the harness and started checking for continuity and shorts. it took me about a minute to discover the problem - the red and yellow wires on the metra harness, which happened to be on adjacent slots were touching on the back side of the connector. the pins joining the wires protruded slightly and shorted each other. i guess the pins didn't break off cleanly from the packaging at assembly and no one bothered with q/a checking afterwards. seemed like sloppy workmanship from a supposedly reputable company. hope no one else runs into this problem or at least recognizes pretty fast.
