USB Tether

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I just joined this forum and would like to begin by saying thank you for everyone's hard work.

You have all accomplished so much and it is very impressive.

About my setup- I've had my 910bt for about a year, I was pretty disappointed in the stock image so I'm currently running Abb's latest image (8.25.2010 I believe). -- VERY NICE! I REALLY ENJOY, THANK YOU ABB!

I've searched through the forum and read a lot of the previous posts on F-series/Z-series about tethering via WiFi over an SD card and some unfortunate news regarding the bluetooth adapter not supporting asyncronous data connections however has anyone investigated utilizing the USB connection?

I have an Andoid based phone (evo4g) and have been very interested in trying to tether my Avic-X910BT via the USB connection. I'm using the USB input for the iPod however I'd assume this should work fine as it is just USB after all...

There is an app available for the Droid OS called PdaNet -- it allows for USB or BT tethering to a PC. In addition to being run on the phone. The software requires that a small application installer (about 1.5~2MB) be run on the client PC which wishes to access the internet via USB. The client PC application is available for XP, 7 & Mac OS however not WinCE (not likely that the developer will make a driver for WinCE either..)

When installing the Client Software basically copies over a driver and creates a virtual device which can be used to access the internet via USB connection. You can see the files being installed into your program files directory as it happens. It works very well on my WinXP notebook... I tried installing the APP on my Avic and as I suspected WinCE refused to even attempt to run the package. It's been a while since I've used Windows Mobile however if I remember correctly installers are .CAB files rather than .EXE, correct?

I am a technical person however I am not a software developer. I would like some input from some of the more senior members regarding whether or not the drivers can be ported. If not, is there another solution to activate a network / internet connection over USB?

The client app can be downloaded at: http://www.junefabrics.com/a/desktop.php

Thanks,

mclovin

Hi there. I've used windows mobile/ce/automotive for years, and I can speak for experience that it's pretty crappy. I don't think you'll find much of the software, as it's all upper application layer stuff that controls it.

I'm more actually curious rather than fix wince to replace it with android. Haret works as a nice bootstrapper for android from windows mobile, and it'd probably work to boot code off an SD card like they do winmo phones. It's a well known tactic when they can't modify the bootloader to run android that when you boot windows, it just sequence boots android. Problematic for an automobile, but my x910 boots horrifically slow anyways. Thanks pioneer.

There's enough android roms for arm hardware that it's probably mostly (if not entirely) supported, with little tweaking it can probably run android fine. If done right, it could tether off your bluetooth phone at least, or usb as you want like any android phone. Plenty of music players and built-in to replace pioneer's crappy windoze software stack.

Any thoughts from the experienced guys? I just got mine installed, so now I'm curious to move on to android as I'm finding how inadequate their software is. AV companies just don't get the software side...

That has nothing to do with Apple, Pioneer, or the units OS. The limitation is with the Android OS on the phones.

Don't get me wrong I am not really hatin on mac..more like pioneer for not adding additional driver support. I wouldn't really call it limitations with the Android os. It would be more that there is so may different versions of the Android os which im sure makes it difficult. Because in my case with the Evo I have an HDMI port and a usb port which are both able to transfer Video and Data with the stock android os. The only way I will be able to get the Pioneer system to accept it will be a bit of work. Because I will have to convert the hdmi signal to RCA.

That is exactly the problem. Until there is a standardized version of Android you likely wont see any support for these companies in the same way you see support for Apple iDevices. Sense the remote control protocol is standard over the dock connector with all Apple iDevices it is much easier for these companies to support those devices.

Not true. they're are 4 IOS OS's now.... Soon to be a 5th. Almost ALL android devices are standardized by using microUSB. I am currently a DEV for the android platform. I am new to the avic scene, but can't wait to dive in. Totally want to integrate android on these things. With USB hosting now available for Android 3.1 and on up, it will make things very interesting in the months/years to come.

The Apple Dock protocol has been standardized for almost five years now and has changed very little if any. That is why you have exclusive Apple iDevice support over anything else. All the manufactures will tell you that they would love to support Android but cant right now because there is no standardized control protocol like there is with Apple devices. That is what I was referring to.

The problem isn't that android isn't standardized. The problem is that Android (except for honeycomb) has never integrated this "control" protocol into their system. Now when ice cream sandwich (next version of android) comes out, it should have USB hosting, and this will fix those issues. But until that gets released, we just sit and wait and be jealous.

PS: The protocol you are referring to is MTP (Media Transfer Protocol).

EDIT: If anybody is a DEV, here is some API's to help kick off some development for Android phones. Includes all the MTP and PTP files.

And it will be two plus years from now before head unit manufactures implement any support. Honestly AVRCP over BT will likely become the standard over any wired control before that happens.

Totally agree with you. I prefer bluetooth streaming any day anyways.
