Here are my thoughts on what works and is still challenged:

  1. iPod - Completely 'greyed out' and not accessible.
  2. Apps - The pairing of the AppRadio Control App + the AR2 is lacking in speed.  I can connect my iphone 5, launch the AR control app, and then turn on my engine, bucket up my seat belt, back out of my garage, down my 10-15 yards of drive way, and half down down my 1/2 block of street before the AppRadio Advance App Mode is visible on my AR2.  Its sometimes a few seconds less or more... but that is about 15-30 second window.  So I am definitely well on my way before I am even selecting what I want to listen to.  This is annoying if you are in and out of the car, running errands.  I also notice the status bar at the top of the iPhone 5 blinks blue as its establishing a bluetooth data link with the AppRadio 2.  You can also see the Apps icon on the AR2 undergo a transformation state.  That way you know when it is ready.  But most over, the AppRadio Mode pops up on its own if the AppRadio Control app is already launched on your iPhone
  3. Pandora - Works no differently with the new configuration.  Completely still rocking.  Just keep the Pandora App or AppRadio Control App up on your iPhone.  Otherwise your AppRadio will constantly pop out of Pandora (both on your phone and AR2) and try to launch the AppRadio Control App.  I think Pandora would work better if it could be just launched inside the AppMode.  There is a constant battle between AppRadio Mode and Pandora sometimes.  The same goes for the Phone
  4. Phone - really no change here.  But I do find if I use Siri to call someone the AR2 really battles with itself.  I will often have the call initiate on the AR2/iPhone, but then the AppRadio 2 will try to pop the AR app on the iPhone and change the input on the AR2.  So then you see a black screen, loose the Phone control AND AUDIO on the AR2.  So I have to quickly hit home, and select PHONE (again!) to get the call back.  If I am not fast enough and the person answering is quick to answer, this can be a very bad/confusing start to the call.

As for the AppRadio Compatible Apps:

  • iHeart Auto is currently having iOS 6.1 compatibility issues. iHeart is currently working the issue and will hopefully fix with just an update to the iPhone app and not a firmware update to the AR2.
  • Waze, CommuteWeather, Aupeo, and Inrix - All of them looked right when first launched, but then they quickly snap to the upper left corner and do not fill the entire screen.  Saw a note in one of their update notes to adjust the TV out settings in your iOS General Settings, but the mentioned option never came up.
  • EZTouch/TiuneIn - Works fantastic like it did before.  I just wish the buttons on the top bar would be bigger.  They are so hard to press sometimes, especially if the ride is bumpy.
  • CarMeda Player, MixTraxx, Extra Mile - All work fantastic.  I have a few new things to learn with MixTraxx since I was able to use it Pre-iphone5.  But all in all is like saying hello to an old friend.  Car Media player also is doing a great job of remembering the last song (and for that matter the album and playlist) it was playing when it was last accessed.  This is heads and shoulders better than when I was using it last Summer.  I was really nervous it was going to still be rough around the edges with the iPod embedded app being disabled.  But it too was awesome!
  • Best Parking, Escort Live, Beej, Parkopedia, and Best Parking - As best as I can recall (I do not use them much) do not really work.  The app will launch off the AR2 touch screen, and you see them launch on your iPhone, but you get a black screen on the AR2.
  • GPS Drive - Black Screen on AR2 with audio only,  No map is displayed on the AR2, you only see the menu on the iPhone.
  • Maps, Calendar, Contacts, Photos, and Compatible Apps all works perfectly fine.  I was amazed Maps works.  I have not played with maps, except to ensure it displays a map, you can type/search, and pinch/zoom.  I also have not tried to do a Siri/iOS Maps search and see what displays on the AR2 screen.  That would be AMAZING if it did its turn by turn audio/video, with Siri responding to your search/navigation request.

So those are my thoughts and experiences thus far.  I need to spend some more time and see if perhaps my lack of patience had anything to do with the black screens, shrunk screens, etc...

If anyone has any hints on the 'not so smooth' experiences I have, please post!

Actually I have found the microphone on the AppRadio 2 to be superb. The voice commands come through bluetooth and Siri understands me about as well as she does in non driving situations, even when I'm at highway speeds.

I have an android and the appradio's mic is only used during a phone conversation.  When I use Voice Command, only the phone's mic is used, which makes it difficult to understand me.

DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE LIGHTNING DIGITAL AV ADAPTER FOR THE IPHONE 5.

Just updated to the latest firmware and I also recently upgraded my iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5. I had the iPhone 4 plugged in with the radio's 30 pin connector for music and video until my av adapter came in the mail. Some results below:

iPhone 4 with new update FW v8.30 and AppRadio 30pin connector

iPod music - no

iPod video - no

AppRadio Apps - no

Pandora - no

Charging - yes

iPhone 5 with new update FW v8.30 and lightning to usb cable plugged into AppRadio usb

iPod music - no

iPod video - no

AppRadio Apps - no

Pandora - no

Charging - yes

iPhone 5 with new update FW v8.30 and 30 pin to lightning adapter cable plugged into AppRadio 30 pin

(same results if using 30 pin to lightning on 30 pin cable to AppRadio usb)

iPod music - no

iPod video - no

AppRadio Apps - no

Pandora - no

Charging - yes

iPhone 5 with new update FW v8.30 and lightning digital av adapter with standard HDMI cable

iPod music - yes (iPod icon is unusable but music plays when selected from iPhone)

iPod video - yes

AppRadio Apps - yes

Pandora - yes

Charging - yes (with lightning to usb cable plugged into AppRadio usb)

iPhone to AppRadio screen mirroring - yes

My iPhone 5 is on FW 6.0.1, jailbroken with evasi0n with AT&T

I don't understand why Pioneer is charging $60 for an HDMI cable that they call the IH-202. I bought a cheap HDMI cable off ebay for $2 and it works fine. The HDMI port on the back of the stereo doesn't have much room for HDMI cables that may have a larger plastic end.

Using the AV adaptor / HDMI setup, is there any reason to still jailbreak the phone?

I jailbreak my iPhone so I can customize it. When the appradio extensions gets to the point of the dev's intent, then yes it'll be the main reason to jailbreak. Once the extension is fully complete and compatible, you'll be able to control all unsupported apps from the head unit.

Dudeman 44, I believe I am missing something here is what I've experienced thus far.

Unit came installed with 8.15.  Using apple digital av hdmi out I get full sound and video mirror mode but no touch.

Once upgraded with 8.30, I lose the sound but it still mirrors after clicking the apps button on the head unit.

Using 8.15, the apple 30 pin to lightning adaptor and original pioneer connector (not CD-IH202) I get a blank screen when I attempt to launch apps on headunit

Using 8.30, the apple 30 pin to lightning adaptor and original pioneer connector (not CD-IH202) I get a blank screen when I attempt to launch apps on headunit

I am using the bypass from microbypass.com and have decided to downgrade the head unit back to 8.15 since it gives me sound and mirrors the phone but would love to be able to take advantage of the touch screen as demonstrated in your video.

One thing to note is that Pandora works fine with 8.15 or 8.30 using the original pioneer connector with the 30 pin to lightning adaptor along with ipod button.

My problem has now been resolved.  My specific issue was caused by not updating in the correct order.

Once I downgraded, I updated it properly with the yuk file first and all is well in the world.

thanks for the video and the info guys

So, I am super new (first post) but I just got Appradio 2 and I would like to attempt to downgrade it from 8.30 back to 8.15 (or do I go to 8.17?) but I have been searching the forums and google and can't find information on how to do the downgrade. Help please?

I saw a few people on here who updated to 8.30 and said their iPhone4/4S no longer works. I just purchased the appradio 2 last night and don't have the iPhone 5 cable yet. I did the update to 8.30 and had the same issue with my iPhone 4.

What you need to do is disconnect the cable and the bluetooth, go into settings on the appradio and you will see a connection setting. If I remember correctly it's default setting is Digital AV or something like that. Click on it and change it to Other then connect your iphone 4/4S back with the cable and bluetooth and it should work. If you don't disconnect the phone from both the cable and bluetooth it won't let you change that setting.

Again I just purchased the unit and haven't installed it in my car yet so I don't know how well the 8.30 works with the 4/4S but I do know changing that setting works.

just tried it . i cant get it to bring my older gen ipod back, its pretty old, but still i dont want to find out that i have to go invest in a new ipod, or that ipod connectivity is disabled entirely, i dont know why someone would create an update that would eliminate the ability to do one of the few things it can do without ARLiberator and a phone hooked up (other than that, the ipod connectivity is the only other thing i looked forward to and now its gone)

I simply used the orginal 8.15 on the sd card formatted with fat 32 and it downgraded back to 8.15 although 8.30 works great with my iphone 5 now so i had to upgrade back
