Backup Camera While Driving 940BT

Recommended Posts

If I understand the manual correctly, you can turn on the backup camera while driving. If so how do you accomplish that? I tried, but cannot figure it out. I got as far as the split screen with the map, but no picture from the camera.

The power for the camera is wired into the reverse lights, and up to the head unit to the reverse signal input wire. I am thinking the camera should be connected to permanent power, and the reverse signal input wire direct to the reverse lights circuit? That way it would automatically come on (and off) when put into (or out of) reverse, and while driving I can split screen the map. Can anyone confirm? Thanks a bunch.

To make the camera come on any time you want such as going forward then it has to have constant power and be connected as an aux input. When you do that you loose the automatic turn on feature when going into reverse which is why I bought my last two. In my F350 I have an X940BT and tried both ways and went with connecting to the reverse light bulb power and reverse input signal. The other way was to run power off my constant 12v to the trailer connection and run the input to aux1, I think it was named and switch to that when I wanted to use the camera. I decided my rear view mirror was good enough when going forward and I liked the auto turn on when going into reverse. I did the regular reverse activate hook up with my X95BH I bought a few months ago.

My brother-in-law has his camera powered by the brake lights.  When he wants to turn on the camera, he has to turn on his dashboard light.  A bit annoying during the day, but he can turn on his camera whenever he wants.

im not sure if they are even remotely the same but my x920bt but mine isnt wired hot all the time.  look at some 920bt reverse threads  there are probably a million of them.  i think my camera is wired right into the radios harness.  not really familiar with your radio and im just trying to help but im not sure that you can full screen the cam when driving forward.  if its like the 920 its a split nav and rear view screen.  i have a shortcut on my home for rear view.

I appreciate the response(s). I know you cannot full screen while driving forward, and yes it would be a split nav screen (per the manual). The head units reverse signal input is wired directly to the reverse lights and camera. Everything works as it should when put into reverse, but when I am moving forward and select the "rear view" from the nav screen menu, I get the split screen with the map but no rear view image. Cant quite figure it out.

it's perfectly normal.  Since your camera is getting its power from the reverse lights, you won't get any picture while driving forward since these lights are off.  To get an image while driving forward, you need to get the power from another source (ie. brake lights while dashboard lights are on)

The camera should be wired into the units switched circuit which is the red wire. This will give you what you want.
