I'm new to the AppRadio and I have been searching all morning trying to figure out what the pros and cons are to the AppRadio vs a AVH / AVIC unit with App Mode.

Crutchfield has the AppRadio 3 w/ DVD and the AVH-X5500BHS for the same price. You seem to get so much more out of the AVH model, but why?

Am i missing something? What is the real difference between a dedicated AppRadio vs an AVH model with AppMode?

Are there features that may not work as well?

As for Navigation, if the AppRadio uses the Apple Maps app, or other navigation app, what makes an AVIC unit better?

I just trying to figure out what i'm missing, when a top of the line navigation AVIC unit is double the price of and AppRadio that can use your phone for navigation?

I'm just trying to wrap my head around the real differences between all of the units that Pioneer offers, aside from physical specs such as connections.

Sorry if my post is vague, it's my first post on here. Also, I do not have any shops in the area that have these units on display where i can hook my phone (iPhone 5) to it and really play with the features. So when it comes to how these units operate, other than YouTube videos, i'm completely in the dark.

Thanks for any help you all can give me.

Mike

I haven't checked, but the difference could be the capacitive touch screen that the AppRadio comes with. While I'm not 100% sure, this may be what allows "pinch to zoom"  and perhaps some other features? ...and maybe Pioneer has to pay Apple a portion of their sales?  Just guessing.

Having said that, If I was to buy a new radio now I would take a hard look at the AVH-X5500BHS. I like my AppRadio2, but I'm not thrilled with it. I like the more advanced audio controls of the AVH-X5500BHS. After having the AR2 for a while now, I'm back to just listening to music most of the time instead of playing with apps. The AVH-X5500BHS seems more conducive to music/media than the AR.

If there is a choice, I'd rather have a full featured AVH/AVIC that included App Mode instead of just AppRadio.   If I lost my phone, I'd still like to know I can fire up the built in Navigation etc.   I also want HD Radio (not required but nice to have once in awhile)

I'm just getting started with my research and leaning towards the AppRadio 3 (and sacrificing HD Radio)   I'm pretty sure the multi touch capacitive screen only works with AppRadio.

I also have a jailbreak iPhone 5 so want the extensions to be as compatible as possible with what the dev uses.

The AVH-X5500BHS requires use to get the Lightening to VGA adapter instead of Lightening to HDMI adapter too it looks like.

Does Pioneer have any new AVH/AVIC App Mode HDMI units on the way?

The appradio is better. Multitouch vs resistive screen is the big key. I've heard from other users that the other units sometimes have problems with the appradio experience. The dedicated appradios work phenomenally better. Also, when are you in your car without your phone? That's just dangerous if you get in an accident.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Appradio does not have subwoofer outputs and the preamp outputs are 2v instead of 4v.   I've also been agonizing over the decision between a AVH5600BHS and the Appradio 3 but for these reasons I'm leaning towards the AVH - seems like a better "stereo" and the whole Appradio thing still seems a bit immature and buggy based on the research I've done so far.

If you use an I phone I would suggest one of NEX HU as they will support car play in a few months provided they release during the summer like their web site states.  The app radio is cool if you are an android user and you root your phone and use one of the hacked AR apps, Or if you run an old jail broke IOS with appex.  For me I would rather not F with all that stuff and get a NEX and have car play.
