Lightening Extension Cable? (only provides power iPhone 5?) Hide Bulky HDMI adapter

Recommended Posts

I was trying to research on if we can use a Lightening Extension cable to hide the HDMI adapter. (less bulk)

I ran across this page:

http://www.appradioworld.com/2013/08/wanted-digital-av-adapter-cable.html

As you can see the guy put out an open letter to all and even hacked apart a cable to check it out.

There is mixed reviews in the comments at the bottom.

I also found this thread when I searched here.

http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/37082-usb-extension-any-brand-work/

The OP asked about USB extensions but VBLUE42 chimed in about Lightening extensions

http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/37082-usb-extension-any-brand-work/?p=269352

This Black one looks nice enough if it will work!

http://r.ebay.com/RxGcbX

(EDIT no it won't don't by this one!) Keep reading...

(I have a black iPhone, and black interior, no need to go bright white)   Again the goal is to have a simple single cord with no bulk.     All the setups and youtube demos I've seen so far show people living with the bulk.

hmmm still searching and came across a possibility.   What about this one?:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/281088760380

The description and Q&A at the bottom even says it works with Lightening HDMI adapters. (and Lightening-VGA adapters)   Might be worth a shot, I'd like to hear someone else's success story though.

Q:  Does this item support video transfer? I need something that will hook up to a VGA adapter Jun-13-13

A:  Hi thank you for your interest in our item. Yes it can do video transfer, but it is a lightning male to lightning female, you need to use your own VGA or HDMI adapter to connect them. Let me know you have further questions. Thanks!

As Ive already stated in this forum and the other, I am using these extensions and they do work full function. Its a simple pass through on the signal to the adapter. Its the adapter that decodes the signals for video. Trust me, it works.

ok which is the best one?, the last ebay one I posted about above has one complaint I found here:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=17749716&posted=1#post17749716

They said the lightening connector is short/stumpy and comes out very easily.    Is there a better one? (prefer Black)

This is the one I am using.

This is the one I will be ordering next week because it is black. It is the same cable though.

As far as the best? They're all made in China and are a pin for pin pass through cable. They should all work equally as good.

Thanks by "best" I meant best bang for the buck yes (China) lol

Ok good to know, so you've officially confirmed it works great!   The seller needs to clarify his description of:

  • Support Data Sync and charging only! Video & Audio are not supported!

I think he is obviously confusing 30 pin Analog audio/video out. (lightening is digital only)

Good Good, I'll order the black one you just pointed out as well.   It's not as chunky as that other one I talked about.

Also to answer your question, the iPhone 5 is controlled via bluetooth on the appradio. The lightning port provides it with video and audio and charging.

Thanks, I finally learned how Pioneer came up with that BT work around to make things work via Lightening. (one of the YouTube videos I watched explained it)

Well it looks like the cable VBLUE42 recommended should do the trick.   The OP on AppRadioWorld just ordered one and posted:

I ordered one on eBay couple of days ago. Should get it on Monday. I had bought one before but if didn't work. Could be I got a defective one back then.

I will update everyone ASAP.

Thanks for the confirmation videos VBLUE42

As I said on the AppRadioWorld page.

I have to agree about quality control with cables coming from China. If it doesn't work, we received a lemon cable. (doesn't mean they all don't work) They use minimal copper, and little support at connector. AppRadioWorld admin probably received a bad one. One http://dx.com example of a bad regular $1.70 lightning cable I received is it would only charge plugged in one directly. The other 5 I bought worked fine though (I could flip them 180 no problem) We get what we pay for. This should hold us over until the higher quality CableJive DockXtender comes out in October. (more copper, thicker support at connector etc)

Here's an extension for $4 that says it does data (again free shipping)

http://dx.com/p/8-pin-lightning-male-to-female-extension-cable-for-iphone-5-white-97cm-214647

((I just ordered one of these as a "backup" and will report back on if it works))

I'd rather have the $15 ebay one though since it's Black and proven to work

Actually here's the chunky black one for $9

http://dx.com/p/iphone-8-pin-lightning-male-to-female-extension-cable-for-iphone-5-ipad-4-ipad-mini-black-198757

(was reported to have a stumpy short lightning connector though, comes out too easily)

Here's another white one for $5.60

A 3rd  update on AppRadioWorld

http://www.appradioworld.com/2013/08/confirmed-cheap-ebay-lightning.html

Two more people said the black eBay cable failed to work for them. (charges only, no HDMI video/audio)

VBLUE42, you're a lucky  guy it seems!    Everyone ordered the black and yours is white though.   (same seller, different colors)   It seems the white one has a better chance of working than the black.

I just got my eBay black cable today.

I hooked up my HDMI adapter to my TV and iPhone plus added extension at home.

IT DOSEN'T WORK!  I repeat it DOES NOT WORK. :-(

When I remove the extension HDMI works great, so it for sure isn't' working.

I extended the regular lightning cable to my laptop, and iTunes syncs fine. (and charges the phone)

It's strange that the extension doesn't allow HDMI to work when data works.  I wonder what's missing/special?

It sucks that the same eBay seller sells both white and black cables with the same price and description yet the black one doesn't work.

I'm waiting for my dx.com $4 cable to arrive next and will post results.  If it doesn't work I'll have to order the other eBay white one.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got my two DealExtreme cables today. One works, One doesn't

The cheapest $4 cable does NOT work
http://dx.com/p/8-pin-lightning-male-to-female-extension-cable-for-iphone-5-white-97cm-214647

This $5.60 cable DOES work! (all good, no tax, free shipping)
http://dx.com/p/8pin-lightning-male-to-female-extension-cable-for-iphone-5-white-207205

Here's the confirmation photo:

dYJglVKl.jpg

I went ahead and used Plast-Dip (spray on black rubber coating) and my white cable is now black! (still flexible, feels/looks good) A can of the stuff is $6
http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/37328-tired-of-those-white-apple-cables-adapters-plasti-dip-them-black/

(more pix soon after 4th coat dries)

The non functional black eBay cable I bought was sent back for exchange with a working white one. I should have it back in a few days. I might try using a black sharpie marker on it to compare Plasti-Dip vs Sharpie.

I'll be keeping an eye out for the higher quality CableJive DockXtender Lightning edition if and when that ever comes out as well. (blog mentioned possible oct/nov release)
