Installation question from Z120BT

I'm considering upgrading from my Z120BT to a 8000NEX.  I am a relative newbie at DIY installation, but did manage to install my Z120BT a couple of years ago (it took me a long time and a lot of anxiety!).   I have read that the harness is the same for the Z150BT and am assuming it's the same case for the Z120BT. 

 

Would installing the 8000NEX simply involve unplugging and pulling out the Z120BT, and plugging in the 8000NEX into the same harness?  

 

Would there be any other need to splice into wires, etc.?  

 

Would the 8000NEX continue to work with the steering wheel controls?

 

Would the parking brake bypass currently installed on the Z120BT still work (would it use the existing wires that were bypassed), or would I need to do something like that again?

 

I have a 2010 Prius, and installed the PAC SWI-PS which currently works with the Z120BT for steering wheel controls.  The Z120BT is installed with a Metra 70-1761 harness, if it matters. 

 

I'm basically just wondering how much work it would take for me to swap in the 8000NEX.

If the harness on the Z120 is the same as the Z110, no it is not as simple as unplugging and plugging it in.  The plug is slightly different, as the fuse on the Z110 is in a different spot than on the NEX, and there is a piece of plastic on the Z's plug that sticks out to protect the fuse which will stop you from simply plugging it in to the NEX.  If anyone has the Z120 they can chime in to confirm the plugs are different.  However, if you did the wiring for Z120, wiring it up for the NEX is just as simple.  I clipped and matched each wire one by one between the harnesses, the only difference is DO NOT use the mute wire to ground on the NEX as part of the bypass.  Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the info. I checked the harness that Crutchfield includes with the NEX800 for my car, and it is the same one I already have installed with my z120bt (Metra 70-1761). Would that mean that it would simply plug into the existing harness? (Or am I missing something?).

 

What about the steering wheel control - would the wiring I currently have still work with the NEX8000?

If both the Z120BT and the NEX8000 use the same harness (as Crutchfield indicates), does that mean they can just be swapped quickly?  Or could there still be the differences that Hurricanfan1 suggested?

The crutchfield harness is from the bare wires of whatever radio you have to the "plug end" of your car's wiring. The reason for the harness is so you don't have to cut up the wires on your car. The only thing that would be useful for you is if the end that plugs directly into the pioneer is exactly the same as your old unit. Let me try a crude "picture":

 

P -> PC -> CH -> CP

 

Where:

 

P = pioneer radio (or any aftermarket)

PC = pioneer cabling, which comes with the radio and has a plug on one end that plugs into the back of the radio and bare wires on the other end

CH = crutchfield harness (likely actually a metra harness) that has bare wires on one end and a plug on the other end.

CP = car plug, the plug that comes out of your factory radio and the other end disappears into various places in your car

 

The two bare wire sections have to be spliced together. Hopefully that makes sense.

The harness looks the same but it isn't. I thought the same thing..piece of cake..NEGATIVE....You're gonna have to wire the 8000 harness. Pretty much the same connections, just disconnect one at a time from the 120 and put them on the 8000. The 120 harness will absolutely not fit the 8000.
