NEX8000 Nav Screen Lockup Issue

Recommended Posts

When I touch the screen to bring up the ZOOM tool or the MAP ORIENTATION tool (3D, 2D or 2D North up) the map positioning locks up and the cursor (Your Car) soon drives off the map. Your current location cannot be seen again until you either touch and drag the screen map until the cursor is in view again or choose the SHOW CURRENT LOCATION from the menu on the bottom right. You must keep repeating this process every few minutes, depending on how far you have zoomed out in order to see where you are on the map. Is anyone else having this problem?

That is the way it works. It you bring up the manual zoom then it "locks" the map position. You have to click the icon (I think it is on the lower left) to get back into automatic zoom with your current position in the middle of the map.

Don't remember seeing that icon, but will check it out. Locking the screen though makes no sense. If want to zoom out just a bit to see more of what streets i am approaching, within a few seconds my cursor is off the map and I can only see where I've been and none of what I am approaching. That is unless I take my hand off the wheel and my eyes off the road every 15 or 20 seconds to manually drag the map to my current location (or use the menu bottom right and touch "show current location"). Not exactly a "hands free" or even "eyes free" operation.  Unless I'm missing something. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I'll check the traffic setting, but I'm pretty sure I don't have it on. Thanks.

I completely agree, you should be able to set the zoom to whatever level you want. I have had that in other built-in gps units I have had in other cars.

The manual talks about auto and manual zoom, and explains better what I was saying in my post above, but I don't have the page number handy at the moment.

Me too, dating back to my first one in a 2001 Lexus and all 3 subsequent GPSs I've owned.

What Pioneer calls it is "Smart Zoom" and it is on page 29. It is supposedly built in and there is no icon that I can find. When there is a set route it's supposed to stay zoomed out when you are far from your destination and zoom in as you approach it. With no set route it's supposed to zoom out the faster you go and zoom in as you slow down. I tried it today and there is very little difference in zoom at different speeds and serves no real purpose. Haven't tried it with a set route yet.

I went back to the installer the other day and we called the Pioneer tech support from the car to discuss as we drove. Even he was not aware of the design flaw and was obviously dumbfounded as to the lack of utility regarding the zoom feature. He said the only way around it is if enough people email a complaint about it to Pioneer, they will probably issue a patch for it.

Pioneer is already working on a patch to correct the fact that every time you touch the map screen for any reason, it marks that as a desired destination with no way to remove it, because so many people have complained about that ridiculous glitch. I've already sent an email about the absence of a "hands free" or "eyes free" zoom function.

Thanks for helping me out.
