Escort Live App Not so Friendly After 1.06 Firmware Update

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen this posted in the two weeks or so that Firmware 1.06 / CarPlay has been out, so I thought that I'd share.

On the two prior Pioneer head units that I've had, as well as the 8000NEX before the Firmware 1.06 update, you would hear a loud and distinct "BEEP BEEP" when the Escort Live app received an alert and the source on the Pioneer head unit was set to iPod/USB.  You wouldn't hear the "BEEP BEEP" if the head unit was set to a different source like Sirius XM or Pandora; but that was okay because you could still receive an audible alert from the radar detector.  You would also hear "Live Police Alert" over the speakers all of the time when local police were detected.  (I assume via Bluetooth)

After Firmware 1.06 update, everything is the same as long as your head unit's source is "iPod/USB" when the alert is received.  But if the source is set to anything else, like Sirius XM or Pandora, the source automatically changes to iPod/USB when the radar detector alert comes in.  Afterwards, you have to manually change the source back to wherever it was previously set.  When the next alert is received, the source changes to iPod/USB again.  Lather, rinse, repeat.

I suspect that now that BT is disabled for CarPlay when the Lightning cable is connected, the only way for the alerts to be heard is through iPod/USB.  But I certainly don't want these alerts to run roughshod over whatever source I am listening to at the time.  I'd like to think that this would get fixed eventually, but am curious how that fix would take place.  I can't see the application controlling the source, can it?  How can the firmware know what message it's receiving over the USB?  (Even if it thought the alert was a phone call, it would still revert back to the original source once the alert was complete, right?)

CarPlay is nifty, but I use my radar detector a lot more than I will use CarPlay.  If I have to disable CarPlay, I will.

I get the same with CamerAlert (UK speed cameras). IOS seems to grab the audio channel whenever it needs to sound an alert and never gives it back. It's not clear to me whether it's a Pioneer bug, an IOS bug or a bug in the app itself. Suspect we'll need to wait for CarPlay aware versions of these apps to fix this.

I had the problem with my source switching to USB/iPod as well. My (temporary) solution was to go to Settings in the Escort Live app, then Alert Settings. For each type of alert, set Sounds to off. Leave Radar Detector Tones set to voice (or whatever audio type you prefer).

This stopped the source switching for me, but of course it also stops audio from coming through when in the USB/iPod source. I'm ok with that, because the audio still plays through the detector itself, which I honestly prefer.

How does it work with the new firmware?

No difference with 1.08 as compared to 1.06.  I ended up using the workaround that mapotter99 suggested.  Even then, I had to set the alert settings for each type of warning to "Off", as well as pair the detector to the app in the car and then set Radar Detector Tones to "Off" as well.

Okay, I take that back.  It happened again to me on a Ka warning that I got last night even with everything set to "Off" per mapotter99's advice.

I'm done.  CarPlay is disabled on my unit until further notice.

Really??? Hmmm.  I haven't had any issues since I turned the audio alerts to off.

I've noticed that anytime my iphone emits a sound, it switches the input on the NEX to USB/iPod.  I'm wondering if this is due to the nature of how CarPlay operates.

I think that you may be on to something.  Just toggling one of the voice alerts to On while still in the "Settings" section was enough to switch sources.
