Does shatterproof window film stop burglars?

Recommended Posts

Has anbody tried this shatterproof glass film. It seems like this would put a stop to most burglars. The only downside i can see is if you somehow became trappped in the car. Would they be able to cut the glass and then roll it down or something. Im just curious. I want to get gps for my car but im worried someone will rip it off.

I spent the better part of 15 years tinting homes and cars. The film you are refering to WILL improve the lbs per sq inch of your window but it will still break and the film will hold it in one place, also just a note the flim required to do this is VERY thick and may cause problems with rolling up and down your windows. Dont let some guy sell you Bull*** there is no tint that will stop a determined theif, money is better spent on a good alarm system.

Relace the windows with thicker panels of lexan. Same material they make paintball mask lenses and those dividers at the bank out of. They are more likely to poke a hole in it that actually break it.

The downside, scratches easy and tends to be expensive.

The other guy is right, put the money into an alarm system.

I am an engineer who retrofits and designs buildings to withstand blast (explosive) pressures with stuff kind of like this. Tinting and polymer composite windows can be very strong (the video looks kind of suspiciously strong for "normal window" with thin film added, my guess it is a composite factory fab window). You can replace your glass with "bullet proof glass" poly or composite but you have the problems listed. You also can add poly film like tint. This will shatter but the poly will hold its shape.

The one of the most important thing with making windows stronger is the frame!!! You can have extremely strong windows but unless the frame is designed to transfer the loading from the window to the frame and hold it in place incase of a break it will just deflect in. So tint will hold the glass together but the broken glass will just fall in attached to the film. Otherwise use poly or polycomposit and make it thick and leave your windows up.

I had poly window tint on my 06 F150. The window was pried out and was laying (mostly still in one piece) where my truck was left parked. There were not the typical millions of small pieces of broken glass around the area, just a few small ones from around the edges of the windows. They can still be pried out. I got the truck back yesterday after being m.i.a. for 8 days. Needless to say my d2 and xm navtraffic modules were gone.

Man that sucks.:( Ya, that what I am talking about. You will need to add a way for the top of the glass to "lock" in to the frame and strengthen the sides. But this gets a little out of control as a project because you have to redesign the weather stripping and shape of the glass. Basically redesigning that whole part of the door.

And don't forget if you do make it very hard to break in you also are making it very hard to get out in case of a wreck. Seconds count when the paramedics need to get to you.

It won't stop them. This just happend to me. I had strong tint on my Windows ... when they broke the Glass it shattered but it was still held up by the tint inside Window Frame ... they just pushed everything inside and it did even more damaged because when they pushed whole shattered window inside it folded in half on the tint and hit dashboard scraching it and puting dings in it.

Yes it stops burglars. I haven't used shattergard security film. I have used Lux window films "shatterproof security window film" .Security Window Films by LUX Window Films are created to hold broken glass together to severely restrict entry. This adhesive quality also prevents glass shards from injuring anyone inside.
