  1. I have had problems #1 and #2 since I got my Z-1 more than a year ago. I don't have the problem in the Winter, Spring and Fall, but during the heat of the Summer, forget it. The thing locks up and won't work, so I am going to assume that the max heat limitation has been reached. If you peruse this site, you will notice that this is a common problem, so I kinda doubt it's the hard drive.
  2. Well, my passenger might want to watch a DVD or manipulate the nav controls while the car is in motion. Why are they being penalized?
  3. I apologize in advance if this may seem a dumb question, but, can't most of the bugs and other issues be worked out by firmware changes off an upgrade CD? In other words, why couldn't Pioneer just release an upgrade cd that had all the necessary firmware changes on it (at least those changes that absolutely did not require any hardware fixes like replacing IC's)?
  4. If you've put a lot of money into your Acura, I would not take it to Israel. I just came back from a business trip in Tel Aviv and Eilat. I did not see one single car (not one) that did not have some damage done to it. Dents, scratches, and worse, to every one of them. Driving and parking are next to impossible in Israel, especially Tel Aviv. People drive insanely and parking is out of the question. And, if your car is as unique as you say, it'll get stolen in a heartbeat. My advice, garage it here, and buy a cheap Mazda (very popular in Israel) there.
  5. If you go back and read a lot of my posts, this has been my biggest problem with the Z-1. To be honest, I don't know what it is, heat, hard drive, etc. What I DO know is that during times when it is not really hot or cold, it works. When it gets really cold or really hot, it exhibits the same problem you're having. So, I can only assume that this is a temperature related issue. Maybe there is a circuit built onto the main board that inhibits the Z-1 from starting. Maybe on some, the hard drive platter has a little more "slop", I dunno.
  6. Well, I live here in Kansas and we get both temp extremes. Look in the owners manual, it will tell you that the unit will operate only in a range of temps. Mine refuses to boot up past the Pioneer splash screen if it is too hot or too cold, Sometimes multiple jabs on the reset button will fix it but generally it will not work if it does't want too. That is the biggest liability with the Z-1, it is a very twitchy machine when it comes to temps
  7. What I meant by thermal protection is the unit is not designed to work if temperatures exceed a preset limit (either high or low). I can't remember what page of the manual mentions this. The set up is this, It is an 05 Subaru Legacy GT with electronic climate controls. The Avic is connected on top of the existing radio wiring (because you can't replace the OEM radio in this car as it also operates the climate controls..silly design, really). I don't not know if this oem radio incorporates an amp or not, again, since the unit works during times of normal temps (not +105 or 10 degrees), I can't
  8. I've got the Z-1 wire tapped into the existing OEM head unit (complete removal and replacement is not an option in this car). You make good point, but why would this unit only exhibit failures during temp extremes. I doubt it's the wiring because it has worked for months without issue. I think there is something wrong with either the hard drive or any of it's related systems. The reason I think this is that there are thermal protections built into the drive mechanism (too hot, too cold, and it won't spin up) and that exactly what is happening. Will probably rma this just in case.
  9. Ok, here's a weird one. My Z-1 has been working flawlessly since Summer. The last couple of days have been bittlerly cold. Now, I know the Z-1 has some thermal protection protocols built into it, but, mine would issue a loud shriek from the speakers and then would blow the fuse. No start up screen, no Pioneer splash screen, nothing. Just a high pitched shreik and then the fuse blows. It finally warmed up a little today and after replacing the fuse about 6 times, I finally got the thing to work. Electrical wizards out there, help me!! If this was a wiring problem, why would it only affect the u
  10. What year Subaru do you have and do you have an pics of your install. I have an 05 Legacy and I'm curious as to how you got a flush fit (which seems near impossible on a Legacy due to a dash support beam on a Legacy).
  11. [quote name="gherbst"]A friend of mine said he figured out the XM hack. Basically you have to sign up for XM. THey turn on your radio id, you get the service. He said he let it run for 3 months or so, then cancelled. He said for the next 3-4 months of course his radio unit didnt work as they were transmitting the "kill" signal. But he (having been a satellite haxor) hoped that XM couldnt afford bandwidth wise to transmit this "kill" signal from thereout for ever... he waited patiently, and a few months later they stopped transmitting the kill signal, and his unit started receiving
  12. Can anybody tell me what chan the Kansas City nav traffic chan is? I looked on their channel lineup but did not see it listed. :?
  13. Unless you can find a way to route air to the unit itself to cool it down, I really don't see anyway around this. I thought about cutting some small vents on the conduits in the dash that route a/c, and fab some tubing that would divert some of the a/c directly onto the Z1. This won't help at start up, but it will cool the unit down faster. If your car sits in the hot sun all day in 100+ degrees, and the temps on the inside of your car exceed the manufacturers limits, there is likely nothing you can do to fix this. I suppose you could get one of the solar powered window fans, that might help a
  14. If you do a search, another poster had the same problem. Essentially, I was right, it was an environmental issue (too damn hot). The Z1 has a nominal temp operating range, and on a hot day, I was exceeding that range, which caused the unit not to boot up until the temps came down. That is why it would not work when it got real hot, but later on, when the day cooled down, it would work again. Not sure if this translates excatly with your situation, but that is what happened with me.
  15. Thanks for the reply, I'll try that. I noticed you live in Fairborn. I was stationed at Wright Patt from the mid 80's to the mid 90's. Graduated from Wright State in 94. Nothing better than a well made Cassanos pizza :D
