on my N1 it just randomly faded the screen is still touch but you can barly see the screen if you hold a light up to it like the light inside went out any ideas what it would be

well with the age of the unit the screens back light could be on its way out or knock loose, or there could be an issue with the illumination wire, and the unit is dimming the screen like it would at night.
