I was wondering if anyone can advise me on what iPOD generation I should buy to allow the video to play on my D3 using the CD-I200 cable.

Generation 5 or 5.5 will be the best. Older ones will work, but you know... they're older. And the current generation don't work. I'd aim for a 5.5 gen.

 

Apple's online store sells refurbished previous gen (5.5) ipods. They're basically like brand new units. It's just that they don't always have them.
