when using an ipod, does the d3 ipod hookup wire, charge or keep the ipod charged while it's being used?

Yes, but you have to go into the D3's function menu while in ipod mode and make sure the charge mode is set to on. Then it will charge the ipod whenever the D3 is powered up.
