is there any hack to make the Z1 tune down to 87.7, seems to stop at 87.9 or 88.1 right now, cant remember which off the top of my head.

Z1/Z2 uses the Supertuner IIID receiver chipset, with hardware support for 87.9 mHz and up. There really is not practical reason to support 87.7 as it's TV frequency territory -- channel 6 I think -- all the way up to 87.9 (Channel 200). While I haven't cared to myself, it seems some people are able to pick up local FM broadcasts on 87.7. But, being a part of the TV band, in Feb 2009, that frequency, along with all analog TV, is going dark.
Excluding the station and tightening the scope surely helps with sensitivity, giving you more FM clarity overall. Heck, maybe there were even legal reasons tied to TV band frequencies were easier to avoid then if it was included. Who knows.
And if you're interested in using 87.7 with an FM-transmitter ... on a Z2 ... Just get a proper aux adapter, or iPod adapter, or "headphone to RCA" adapter, or ETC.
With more inputs than a 2-bit-whore, the Z2 would cry if it knew you were using FM to transmit your tunes.=(
