I am preparing a D3 install in a 2006 Passat and would like suggestions on where to locate the XM and Bluetooth modules. I can try to mount them under the pass seat or in the trunk. Behind the dash is tight. Anyone have any experiences/suggestions on location?

I've got all my external hardware under the passenger seat. Couldn't fit it in my dash either.

Is there any risk with a passenger collapsing a unit or is it high enough to not cause an issue?

i dont exactly know what you mean

but theres no way that the unites can be smashed becasue they are towards the back of the footwell where your passengers feet end up when their legs are completely stretched out.

no pressure on the units whatsoever....

unless you passsenger starts to stomp in that area.

Obviously with a footwell install, be aware of the **** that can soak through and corrod the connections. If you're in an area where they use salt on the roads in the winter, it will cause some issues eventually.

In my old explorer, I installed my XM tuner under the pass. seat. In the winter, the kids boots would dry and all the saltwater would find its way to the unit. The bottom was quite rusty after 2 winters...but the unit still functioned.

I don't know how close (if at all) your Passat is to my MkV Jetta, but there was a fantastic spot to mount the BT module in the pass side dash access panel. The panel pops off easily, and had plenty of room to mount the unit and I easily ran the wires to the area behind the stereo from there.

Good luck.

I am going to try to get the units behind the dash. I will be doing this during the weekend and will post the results.

I don't necessarily prefer the pass seat location, but I may have a space problem behind the dash.

Couldn't put anything behind the dash. Ended up with the XM module under the pass seat.
