During the day you cant tell that its a faceplate unless you stare at it, and at night, you can barely see in, so its even harder to tell.

30% on Driver / Pass Door.

Prettty cool ,good job ive been thinking about doing that also

Posted Feb 25, 2008 · 05:21 UTC#3

I thank my lucky stars I live somewhere I'm not even remotely close to needing something like that...

But good job none the less.

its not about where we live that i would be worried about......

its where i might have to go

I live in orlando, and its not safe at all... Crime down here just keeps growing and growing... Yesterday someone fired off 40 shots about a mile from my apartment, and I live in the upscale area of the city. (Termed Millenia due to the Mall at Millenia)

I have little trust in people down here... In michigan its a different story. But down here, I try to lower my risk as much as possible.

I was thinking aboiut doing the same until a co-worker pointed out my xm, sirius and GPS antennas that were on the roof as a give away. Anyone come across the same idea that if they say the fake face they would know by whats on the roof?

Posted Feb 26, 2008 · 17:56 UTC#7

I'm going to think about something like this. The low-tech crackheads around here likely haven't a clue as to the roof antennas...so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

However, the fact that those lowlifes may be in a car beside you at some point (when your driving in the same neighborhood all the time) and see the unit in action may be an issue. I drive a noticeable/recognizable vehicle within a small area of the city. If someone sees me using it, they can more than likely find me and get it when they want.

Oh well...that's what INS is all about, i guess. Can't live with OEM forever!

(and today there was just a newspaper article about how theft of car electronics, esp. portable nav units, is on the rise here (and elsewhere)). Lookin forward to it

So right away you thinks its an immigrant, Why?

It can be anybod. Even a guy you went to HS with...looks like you, acts like, talks like you, and is is right under your nose!

why do you have to automatically ASSume its and immigrant?

Posted Feb 26, 2008 · 20:33 UTC#9

Ummm...no, sorry...INS = INSURANCE. Not that INS

You should be asking yourself that question...

Sorry for the confusion, but I couldn't help laughing aloud when I first read your "interrogation." No biggot over here

Posted Feb 27, 2008 · 17:58 UTC#13

ya i know, apologies....

just that ive never seen insurance, abbreviated with capital I..N...and S.

Posted Feb 27, 2008 · 23:58 UTC#14

hahaha funny mistake...

Yea my GPS and XM are located on my dash... but most people are not that smart....

Posted Mar 03, 2008 · 16:52 UTC#15

Hahaha This is hilarious! If you could mod up a way to keep the velcro off your dash when not in use.... it'd be awesome!

My insurance covers aftermarket equipment on/in my car. If it gets stolen, it's covered. Sure it sucks, but I've been lucky so far.

EDIT:Oh damn... there's already a topic on here about a similar deal without velcro...

After giving this more thought, I...

1. ...added $1000 in aftermarket stereo coverage via Geico. Cost me $15/6mos.

2. ...am working on a faux cover utilizing a photo of the old OEM stereo, a thin piece of cardboard, and an apple juice bottle cap. I plan to put the photo on the cardboard, cutting the lines for the buttons so that they don't appear flat like the photo, and gluing the apple juice bottle cap, painted flat-black, onto the "faceplate." The bottle cap will make it look like the OEM radio dial and add some depth to the whole thing.

When peeking in the tinted windows, it will appear just like a stock radio...i think. I might even photoshop some sort of antitheft message into the picture on the screen of the old radio...or maybe just a red bright security light.

There is enough room on all sides of the HU to allow folds to fit nicely between the HU and the dash kit. I'll have to make one concession, though, and allow the D3's volume knob to poke through the picture. Luckily, it's small enough to go unnoticed.

Lastly, to hold it in place in case the folds don't work, I can use an old MP3 interface cable to connect to the D3 through the faux faceplate. Just need to make sure the other end of the cable is visible to onlookers just in case they think I may have left the MP3 player in the car.

When this plan comes to fruition, I'll post the end result.

Don't know if it's too late... But I did this with my truck... Used a stock Ranger XL deck and glued in all the buttons behind it and used magnets in the corners of the bezel where the faceplate would snap in and put them inside the faceplate as well... Hope you like it!

(I know I need to paint my bezel, it's next lol)

Why not place a plain black piece of plastic or cardboard with a fold in the gap to hide it...

It works for me!

How about a little sticky that says "Stealing this unit is futile. It is password protected !"

My favorite is the faux 'seat cushion'

1. Take a piece of 1/2" plywood and cut it to the shape of your seat base.

2. Drill 2-3 dozen 1 1/2" deck screws into the board

3. Flip the board over and loosly cover the points with polyfill

4. Cover your pillow with any kind of cloth, naugahyde, vinyl

Put that sucker in your seat at night and when the theiving deadbeat tries to help himself/herself you your AVIC ....

OUCH ! ... and you have a DNA sample !

BOO YAH SHACKA !

already thought of somethin like that...i put razor blades on the bottom of my sub box in my old s10...imagine 60 lbs of pressure pushing a razor into ur fingers

problem with doing something like that is believe it or not if they get injured they can sue you. i heard soemthing a while back where some1 tried breaking into a house via chimney, and fell/hurt himself...he sued the home owners and won.
