Couple problems with VSS reading and tracking...

On one road near my house, and only this one road, my speed reading in calibrations reads in excess of 146... This morning while doing about 40 it read 156MPH... Now while I have been known to ahhhmmm drive that fast, its not on a public road.

So I pulled over to the side of the road and let the vehicle actually stop and the MPH came down to 0. Then it reset itself just fine and worked according to my actual speed. Ive got everything hooked up correctly, the VSS is correctly installed, should I hard wire it instead of the crimp connection? Or is something else wrong?

it doesnt matter. the speedometer doesnt get its info from the vss wire

Huh??? It sure does! Or are you talking about the Z2? And even the speed on the Z2 is most defintely affected by the VSS.

I'm wondering if he didn't have this unit installed in another vehicle. When we switched our first Z1 to another vehicle, it did the same thing. The speed was incredibly fast and had us traveling 20 miles in a few seconds, resetting back to the proper location when the satellites corrected the location, then taking off again. The reason was the new car had a different VSS signal rate than the old car. A complete reset of the Z1 cured it. VSS is there for a reason and the Zx most definitely uses it. It cost Pioneer a lot of money to utilize that signal in their units. They wouldn't spend it if it didn't help.

im not talking about the speed pulse. im talking about the actual speedometer in the guages screen. no, it has nothing to do with the speed sense. it is dead on without the speed sense hooked up at all.

maybe thats not what he was talking about, but he said it read 156 mph. the speed pulse does not give a reading in mph. its just a number and does not coincide with your actual speed. so, forgive me if i misunderstood his question, but it was worded a bit confusing

Ahhh! Now you make perfect sense to me Misfit! Thanks for the update...and I think you may be correct the way you read it and I was misinformed.

So I reset the unit and that cured it. For a minute. Its back to excessive speed readings again. Mostly on a cold start. Once I stop and allow the unit to reset itself it seems to work much better.

I hardwired the VSS to the harness instead of the vamp clip and like I said above it still is a problem. It has read that Im doing 70+ MPH when the car is at a dead stand still.

And no its never been in any car except the STi

So if the VSS wire in the car harness has nothing to so with the speedo gauge, whats the point of having it run to the cluster? And why is reading ridiculous speeds when the car is not moving those speeds at all? Im going to check and make sure it hooked it up to the right wire but Im 95% sure I did.

The 156MPH is what the vehicle dynamics screen and the 3d calibration screen said. Not what my speedo reads.

Sounds to me like you don't have the correct wire. Try this. Try removing the VSS wire from the nav unit completely for a few days and see if it clears it up. Don't worry, the GPS and gyro sensors will work it. If it clears up, I would look for another wire to be your VSS.

i didnt even wait, I looked at the VSS wire and it was the incorrect wire. SO I switched it to the wire that someone used for the 07 Sti Limited and now its working great. Ill be testing it during the week to make sure.

See, I was only 95% sure...
