D3 Newbie needs guidance before putting in.

Alright, I used to run a car stereo store for 6 years, so I'm not afraid to dig into my rig and put the unit in, but I have a few questions on general Usability on a D3 in my 04 Denali.

I have 4 myron/davis 7" headrest monitors on the way (leather, color matched to my Denali) and I want to use these with the D3.

So if you could bear with me, here's what I would like to do:

Avic-D3

XDV-P6 for playing through ext-input to rear monitors

1in-4 out video switch to run all 4 monitors at once. (I'm ok with them all having the same image for now, kids aren't old enough to want different shows... yet :) )

Access adapter to use Onstar and Bose with the D3

I presume I'll need the steering wheel adapter to set that up?

Lockpick so I can watch movies/nav while driving?

Am I missing a component in my list above?

Can I use the nav up front and have the rear monitors on while driving (on the dvd changer?) and if so, can the audio from the dvd play on the system (speakers?)

My Denali has factory Onstar and Bose, but just the cd/tape+6disc changer, no factory nav or RSE.

Thanks ahead of time, my monitors get here friday, and I am looking forward to buying a D3 and getting this done!

You don't need that. The motion bypass on the D3 is done using nothing more than what comes in the box. All you do is relocate 1 wire on the wiring harness and ground 2 wires and it's done.

No, the D3 doesn't support dual zone mode. You have to have the DVD playing on the D3 for it to put it through to the external monitors (and for the audio to play through the speakers)... And I'm not even 100% sure (I've heard conflicting testimony) that it will send video from EXTERNAL sources through to the external monitors. I've heard say that it will only send video from a DVD in the D3's internal drive to the rear screens.

Thanks for the response..

It looks like a D3 isn't going to work for me.

Do you have a suggestion for how to make that work?

Thanks :)

The N4 and Z series will both do it

I was hoping to stay in the lower price range for a headunit, but it looks like I may have to go with a Z model.

Is it worth buying a Z2, or just find a really good deal on a Z1?

And will a Z1 do dual zone, nav in front dvd in rear? And will it use the slave DVD drive for the rear source?

Thanks for your help!

With the Z series, you have three choices on what goes on the back screens. 'Mirror' will put whatever is on the front screen on the rears; 'DVD' will play a DVD from the Z's drive on the rear screens and output sound to headphones but will still have the audio from another source through the car speakers; 'AV' will send whatever is plugged into the A/V input of the deck to the rear monitors.

In your situation, you would use the DVD changer in standalone mode and plug it into the A/V input on the Z. It would then send that to the back monitors

As for which one to buy, the Z3 is out so prices should probably continue to fall on the Z1/2. If you want the newest maps get the Z3, if not...get an older one
