what type of RCA cable do I need to buy to hook up my backup camera? is it just standard RCA like the one used for amplifier hookup?

Yes, just like an amp patch cable... except it's only one channel, not two. You don't need anything super-expensive like you do for amps, because you don't have to deal with sound quality or anything. You should be able to pick up a cheap-o single channel RCA cable (15' or whatever you need) at radio shack. Or if they don't have the single channel ones, you can get an 2 channel audio patch cable and only use one side.
