I tried plugging in my mp3 player to the 3.5mm jack on the front, and no luck. I have the Avic D3 set to Aux2 Video, as its either video or off. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or havent done something. Please help!

Are you using the correct cable? The D3 uses a different plug configuration and if you don't use the Pioneer cable (I forget the model number) you won't get any audio at all.

Oh I didnt know there was a special cable for the front input. I just used a generic 3.5 to 3.5 plug i got at an electronics store.

Yeah, the pin that goes in there has 4 contacts. Left audio, right audio, video, and ground. The configuration of where on the lack those are is different than in standard mini-jack av cables IIRC.

can anyone suggest a cable then?

Thats the plug that goes in the back, isnt it?

Strange I've never had a problem using a regular stereo 1/8" cable on the front jack of the d3.

Yeah, thats why I'm wondering whats up. It used to work, but now it wont.

It depends on what you're plugging into it... some pin locations match, and some don't.

You are referring to the front AV jack, correct?

Mine works with a standard 1/8" cable on my iphone.

The Pioneer connector is somewhat non-standard for video use but appears to have been designed specifically so that an audio plug will work. The video signal has been moved from the ring (just below the tip) to the base of the sleeve (closest to the insulated grip). This maintains the same configuration as a 1/8" stereo mini plug - left audio channel is on the tip, right audio channel is on the ring, and ground is on the sleeve (the rest of the barrel).

When you plug a standard 1/8" stereo plug into the front of the D3, the audio will work normally and the video channel will be grounded.

So basically, if you want a male-to-male mini jack connector to work, you're gonna have to do some cutting and splicing for everything to work right.

Yes, if it's for video use. You would have to swap the right audio and video wires on the end that plugs into the D3.

For stereo audio (without video), a standard cable will work without modification.

So why would the 3.5mm plug I got from walmart work, but not the same 3.5mm plug I had to buy from a small electronics shop not work. Are the configurations on the plug ends different from each other? If so, then I understand. I had no concern over video or anything, I just wanted to play music. Thanks for all the replies!

Because items sold at Wal-Mart are higher quality? (no that couldn't be it  )

I guess the one you got from the electronics store was defective in some way. Sometimes a difference as apparently insignificant as how pointed the tip is can cause a plug not to make proper contact in the jack. And then the same plug might work fine in a different device. A few years ago I had a satellite radio connected to a cassette adapter in two different vehicles. With one, everything worked fine but with the other I lost the left channel audio until I swapped adapters.

Haha, ok maybe its just a defective cable. I guess its off to high quality walmart to get another one!

I've got a pair of cables that won't work either. One is a relatively expensive RadioShack cable with gold plated plugs, and the other is some generic male/male. Neither one works. :? Stupid pioneer!
