does the learning status on this thing ever change from the basic "simple hybrid"? mine is about 3 months old and i wonder sometimes what it is thinking, ex. going to work which is about 1 hr away from house today and decided to let the D3 get me there, now mind y ou i have went the same way for 10 years, i know the shortest route, I was on the last stritch of road that is about 6 miles country (straight east end of road is work), D3 did good all the way to here, than all of at once it wanted me to turn left (north) and follow that 10 miles and hit a highway take it 6 miles east and than go 10 more miles south, just to get to the place that i was 6 miles from.

also i know the other day the screen showed me to turn left but the dumb woman told me to turn "right" ahead

is this thing still learning or should i take it back to CC and get a different one?

Is VSS/reverse hooked up? Got a good antenna connection?

Posted Apr 20, 2008 · 22:55 UTC#3

it won't leave simple hybrid unless the vss wire is hooked up.

I guess the stupid BB guys didn't hook up my wire cause that's what mine says all the time and the speed pulse always says 0.

Thanks to this thread I found out my VSS isn't connected either.

Is there a reason an installer wouldn't do so?

Does the VSS have any impact on the bypass?

The VSS has no impact on the bypass or vice/versa.

It just helps the GPS perform more accurately.

You don't absolutely have to have it hooked up for everything to work.

They did poke a hole in my firewall and has one wire going through it, so if it ain't connected right then all they've done is basically fucked my truck up.

I assume you own a Ford Ranger. If it is see if that wire going thru your firewall is tapped to a gray/black wire. That is your PCM.If it is then double check the tap. What year is your truck?

It's a chevy actually, 2007 Silverado. It's a red wire and they tapped something in the harness coming out of the fusebox all the way in front of the engine bay.

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 05:09 UTC#10

Sounds like a switched power wire.If i'm right then thats just sending power to your unit.Your VSS is probably not hooked up.You need to see what color wire they tapped the red wire to

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 06:53 UTC#11

Well you'd think they'd tap something INSIDE the damn cab. I like to go out mudding so now I gotta silicone that hole and hope they didn't make any more behind the dash.

Not sure if the whole length of wire was red though, they may've just gotten a random speaker wire to run back to the cab....Definitely will NOT be taking my truck to that installer anymore.

Just rechecked that wire, and it's actually pink. Looked red when I was working under there. I found a splice in the front bay to a pale yellowish wire with a black stripe, but it looks like they had just cut the wire in half then crimped in a cap but there's only one wire in it.

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 20:01 UTC#13

Ok that is your speed sense wire(pink). That wire they cut should be green/white.The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is in the left front of the engine compartment to the left of the fan shroud. Is your truck a gas model?

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 20:08 UTC#14

Yep, it's a 1500 w/ the 5.3 LY5, non-Bose or factory XM but has Onstar.

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 20:27 UTC#15

Double checked that wire and it's a pale color with a black stripe...There is a darker green with white stripe in the harness but I'm having difficulty finding where they routed that pink wire, I think they came out just beneath the brake master cylinder and there's multiple harnesses running through that area.

It doesn't seem like they hooked it up at all, there's no pink wire other than a little bit sticking out from a duct-taped section of the pale yellow/black stripe wire that was probably cut.

Err, sorry about the size of the photo, forgot my camera was set to max (4 mp).

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 21:32 UTC#17

It looks like they spliced into the yellow wire but I can only see so much looking at a pic.You know if I were you I would just take it back to BB and tell them your Speed sense wire isn't hooked up properly. If YOU short out your PCM then you have big problems.Let them do it then they'll be liable.

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 21:47 UTC#18

Probably should, I did pay 155 bucks to get it installed, and it has a lifetime worksmanship warranty.

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 21:53 UTC#19

If it was a cut and dry tap and you knew everything is wired right then you could do it but I'm not sure if they cut the wire in the back of the unit and ran another color wire and you think its the speed sense wire when it could be a power wire.Let them do it that way you're safe.

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 22:03 UTC#20

Yeah, just gonna have to find some time to put it in for a bit. The place is right around from where I live so I could probably get a ride back...I installed an XM tuner after they did the work but I didn't touch any of their connections, just plugged in the IP-BUS data cable and tapped the cig lighter's 12v power.

Posted Apr 21, 2008 · 22:09 UTC#21

It shouldn't take them no more than 5 mins if they ran the wires right.

Posted Apr 24, 2008 · 16:22 UTC#22

sounds like the wire going through the firewall to the distribution box is the dimmer wire, i could not find anywhere to tap inside the truck in my 2006 silverado, all the wires at the headlight switch are backwards, 12v constant when lights are off, and 0v when the lights are on, so i tapped into the tail light fuse under the hood.
