There is a place to connect another speaker in the back for guidance but I don't want to hook up an extra speaker.

Is there a setting somewhere to bring it to the regular speakers?

Check your Nav Voice volume level. It could be set to zero which means you have no voice. Just turn it up and this should solve your issue.

The volume level is all the way up.

Also, with BlueTooth connected I can make calls but don't hear any ringing through the Z1. The ring volume is also all the way up.

I use a Blackberry 8100.

I had a similar problem one time when I quickly reinstalled my Z2 without paying attention to what I was doing.

Turned out I had accidentally plugged the mic into the external speaker plug. I got no voice output because it was being routed through to the microphone, and I couldn't use voice control or make phone calls at all.

It may seem simple, but it's worth checking.
