Can we hook up laptops/PC's to the AV port on our AVIC-D3s?

I got a VGA to composite (yellow) cable and ran the cables to my AVIC-D3 AV1 port. I also hooked up the white/red composites.

The audio from my laptop works great, but the video just flashes when I try to send it to the AVIC-D3. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Do we even have the capability?

Thanks in advance,

Sean

By the way, I'm well aware that the touchscreen isn't going to work. I am only in this for video signal!

I would go to the website of the company that makes your video card for your laptop. Check to see if they have a "video control center" or something of that nature. It will give you more control over the signal you send to the D3.

If you don't know what video card you have, go to google and search for a free program called Belarc. Download it and install it. It doesn't have any viruses/spyware/adware, and it will tell you everything you need to know about your computer once you run it.

Good luck, I've considered doing this but haven't gotten around to it yet. Let me know how it goes.

I'm not sure if it will work, due to the D3's resolution being smaller than most computer's will allow you to set the resolution... most computers will only allow you to set it as low as 800x600. But the D3's screen is 500x240. That may be why you're running into a problem.

Does your laptop have an S-video output? A lot of them do nowadays... If so, you might want to try running that to the D3 using a, S-video to composite adapter rather than the VGA output. That might allow you more flexibility as far as what resolution screen you can display the computer on because the S-video signal is just a video signal, where as as the VGA output is meant for a monitor which communicates not only the video signal, but resolution information between the monitor and computer as well.

my laptop doesn't have an s-video.. but i'll test my cousins.. and try to get a program that uses custom resolutions

thanks for help

i will update upon success or failure

If you update your video drivers on the laptop they should include a more detailed control center in the display options. There you can set video play back options on a second monitor which is how the D3 would be setup. The lower resolution of the d3 shouldn't be an issue

Composite video isn't really 'bound' by a resolution. NTSC is technically 720x480, so the video card should downscale to it.

Does the video out on the laptop work on other screens? Like, regular TVs?

Ive had mine hooked up like that for like 10 months.i used S-Video out of laptop into RCA's. I used a broadband card to have internet on my Z1. I have a wireless keyboard with built in mouse. I took a USB extension and ran it up thru my vent and plugged in the eye for the keyboard to respond well, since I had my laptop tucked away and was not seen. i bought the laptop for my car for this reason. Its powered by an Inverter. I have the laptop on power saver, so I never have to pull the laptop out to turn off and on. I get on ebay, and Avic411 all the time while driving and best of all when sitting in rush hour traffic.

Still cannot get this thing to link. I have a VGA to composite adapter and I can see the signal on my D3, but it's all corrupt looking. I tried doing a custom resolution setting (500x240) but I can't get it to stay at that resolution. My system automatically reverts back to 1280x800. Powerstrip program is not helping at all either. I even bought a new laptop, because mine was outdated. The new laptop isn't having anymore luck.

I'm going to try a composite to s-video adapter because my new laptop has s-video, but if this doesn't work.. im out of ideas.

composite to s-video adapter works... picture quality isn't anything to write home about but overall its nice to have it working

Told ya so! :D

It's not the resolution. You need to set the laptop up that so that it recognizes the d3 as the primary monitor and it doesn't default to the laptop screen. It is not a simple plug and play operation

mine looks fine i have a newer laptop. I used gold palted cables i dunno if that helped or not. they were $100 at my local electronics store

Please don't go buy gold plated cables for your laptop :?
