can i connect ipod adaptor to any mp3 player or does it have to be apple ipod?

Yea ipod only.

Any other mp3 player will have to be plugged in to one of the two AV inputs and controlled by itself. Only the ipod will work with the ipod cable.

(Which is why it's called an IPOD cable)
