If I go out and get the N3 discs will it change the map look on my display or will it look the same with just updated POI and addresses?

it will update the whole unit, the look, background, options, and maps. BUT you will lose the ability to watch dvd's while you drive and input points to the nav. ( if you grounded the unit). there are a few options once you upgrade solder you board or i made a hybrid DVD

the hybrid dvd option is available if you do not feel comfortable opening your unit...

otherwise, the best option is to mod it so you never have to worry about it. follow the tutorials in my signature.

Can you clarify the SOLDER POINTS on the N1 ?

Are they the RED dots I've marked on the attached image? In your pic, there is a blob of solder on the YELLOW dot.
