I can't figure out how to search for the nearest gas station without having to choose a brand first. Is it not possible to ask it to search for all gas stations?

I had the same problem. You can get round it by registering a saved search - it let me save at any point in the POI hierarchy, so I saved it at "Petrol stations", before choosing which company. When I run the search, it picks up all the retailers

The POIs are odd - my UK unit doesn't have a "supermarkets" POI category. However, if you search for a specific chain (e.g Tesco) it will find it if there is a cashpoint at that store. For example, it might list "HSBC Ferndown (Tesco)". So...they could put in details of every cashpoint, including what store it's at, but they couldn't manage a simple list of supermarkets. Hmmm...
