I had my d3 installed for 4 days now and i finally fixed my alternator whine by grounding one of the RCAs to the unit and still couldnt get my CD player working. anyways i was driving and my 4 channel went out all the sudden and i smelled burning plastic and all teh sudden my dash in my tahoe started smoking!!
and my 11 pin RCA molex melted? how did that happen. and how much will this cost to get fixed on the unit side. a new 11 pin RCA connector alone is $50...
this was not my first install either...
How Did this Happen?!
Wow... that's a first. Maybe it had something to do with how you grounded the RCA or maybe the harness wasn't plugged in all the way or correctly and there was a short. It's almost guaranteed that it was due to an installation problem, though. Pretty sure it's not something you could get replaced/fixed under warranty. HOPEFULLY for you the only thing that's messed up is the AV harness and nothing inside the unit.
yea i mean unit works its just the molex on the unit for the RCAs is melted and burned a little. its on the bottom 2 pins from the left idk which RCA that is...?btw any idea on price of getting it fixed?
the 2 grounds on the bottom burned?? how do the grounds do that? the one the burned was the one i had grounded to the unit too? ![]()

usually signs of a short or an overheating wire.
well how can i prevent shorts on this harness? i checked my 4 channel cable and it has to kinks or tears?
kinks create a hotspot in the wire. tears, depending on the wire can short out the wire if it comes in contact with another wire or a bare metal surface. im gonna go ahead and assume thee kinks and tears are inside your dash and theres not alot of room to work with.
either that or all your wires are loose and messy (not loose connections). so if im correctabout that, unkink the kinks and tape the tears. after youve done that and made sure NO metal part of any wire is visible, tape all the wires together. itll make the harness stiffer but itll be much cleaner and much less prone to kinks and tears.
