sorry if posted before, to load a custom splash screen pic is it supposed to be 800 X 480 and a jpg or bmp?

Be aware that the bottom 125 or so pixels of the image show up because Pioneer decided to cover it up with that stupid "System is starting up" alert. Just in case we don't know that the system is starting up.

or does it run off your SD card all the time...

I'm sure you can reset it to the default screen. And no, the image is stored inside the unit on it's flash memory. You don't need to leave the SD card in the unit.
