Pre-install questions of Avic D3....

I might be able to get the Avic D3 for $250 and was wondering a few things before I buy it. I have a 2006 Subaru Legacy and wanted to install this JUST for the GPS, not DVD or CD. So I want to keep my current stock CD setup.

Would it at all be possible to just tap in to a 12v power source like the cig lighter for power, ground, and VSS and have the unit function (without sound of course)?

I talked to a local audio shop and they said they could wire a tiny tweeter into the Avic directly and hide it in an air vent for some sound for the GPS functions, is it possible? If so, I'll do it myself since they want to charge $300 for that install.

I would just replace my stock setup but the Avic D3 runs off the CD maps and you can't listen to CD at the same time, right?

Thanks.

yes the setup you are talking about will work, but I would just replace everything with the D3, I have had mine for about a year and it uses memory nav, which means you put the nav disc in, program your route and then eject the disc and it saves the route to the memory and you can play cd's or whatever you want. It seems like alot of trouble, but it really isn't. Also you could get an ipod to keep in your glovebox or wherever and leave the navi disc in. Hope this helps.

thanks for the reply. I really want to keep the stock setup because I like the way it looks and sounds and don't want it to be a "dummy" unit. I want to use the stock for the sound and the AVIC for navigation.

I want to place the AVIC where the little cubby hole is at the top between the vents. I don't want the stock system to end up being just a dummy plus I thinks it inconvenient to swap discs on the AVIC d3. Heres a pic of my current interior.

For $250 you can get a nice dedicated navigation unit that will integrate with your factory sound system.
