Z3 / iPhone 3G Bluetooth whining/buzzing noise

Hello-

A little background. I have a Z2 unit that I upgraded to a Z3. I also have the Pioneer BT unit. I had paired it with my Verizon enV and had no issues. Calls came through clear, both on my end, and on the callers. I had no other interference issues to speak of.

I recently ditched the enV for the iPhone 3G. Now, I have all sorts of whining/buzzing noises coming the speakers. It isn't so bad if I have the music up on the loud side, but if I have the music turned down, the noise is troublesome.

Any troubleshooting pointers?

Thanks

You might be keeping the phone too close to the head unit? Try moving it away. My wife and I both have Z2s and iPhones and aren't having any issues.

Thanks for the reply. I did a lot of searching online, and it looks like the problem lies in the GSM phone systems, not the iPhone itself. The CDMA/TDMA systems do not suffer from this type of interference. I will see about trying to move the phone further away from the head unit.

Another thing that I noticed....my Wife's 05 Camry has the same problem, and it has the stock radio. We were driving around the other day, and I started to hear the interference again. I unplugged the iPhone from the charger, and the interference continued. I turned the volume all the way down, and the next thing I know, the interference is back.

Evidently if you don't have adequate shielding on the speaker wires, they will pick up the interference generated by the GSM phones.

I am surprised you are having so much trouble with the z2. I have had issues with other radios in the past but the z series (and f series) seem to be ok. Maybe its the wiring in the car itself.

In my F250 I often put my iphone on the dash right above the radio so its literally 2-4 inches off of the top of the z2 and dont get any interference. if its not there its in my right pocket or in the center console.

Same thing in my wife's Ford Escape and in her old Jetta that we sold recently.

Is your Iphone 3G connected to Edge(if you're wih ATT) when you hear it?

I've had both the original Iphone and the 3G, and it has got to be the worst when it comes to bleeding into speakers, like they do more tower talking than most phones... The 3G is a tad better, but I still get it with my PC's speakers... I haven't heard it with the Avic though, not even when hooked up to the Ipod module... It's strange that yours is making that much noise... how close is the phone to the BT module(if you have it) when you're driving...ie...I keep my Iphone in my left pocket, and my BT module in under the center console in my truck, giving it about 2 or 3 feet distance from each other.

It would suck to have to put it in airplane mode when driving...

I use my iPhone on Edge all of the time right now but I had it on 3g for about a week when I got it and didnt have issues with either.

Just to add to the bluetooth comment, my phone is usually in a pocket on my thigh and almost at my knee which which keeps it about 6 inches from my bt module.

I think it may be getting into your factory wires either at the stereo or the speakers. You can probably put some RF chokes on the wires (clamp onto the outside)

Thanks for all of the replies.

The BT module is under the dash of my 2004 Toyota Tacoma Dbl Cab. The iphone usually is in one of the cup holders in the center console. The distance between the two is probably 2-3 feet.

In my Wife's 2005 Camry, the iphone is resting on the center console. The stock radio in the Camry doesn't have BlueTooth.

In either vehicle, the interference can be heard through the speakers in the vehicle. It does not seem to change the noise if the following items are cycled on/off:

- BT on iPhone

- WiFi

- Connect/disconnect car charger

I'll try the RF chokes and see how that works.

Thanks again.
