does anyone know if you can plug a external hard drive into a avic d3? i have seen a usb port on the back and dont want to pull it back out and try it if some knows that it wont work.

Sorry boss, ain't gonna work. With the d3 u need one of the bus adapters and even then it will only work with flash drives up to 2gb I believe, at least thats what worked when I tried it out with my d3 when I had one, it was kind of cool, but for only being able to read 2 gb I didn't feel it was worth the price and returned it.

what about replacing the DVD drive w/ a hardrive? like if it's a IDE interface unplug it inside and replace it w/ a HDD. we could go one forther and add a HDD to the "bus" inside.

The chances of the unit recognizing the hard drive and actually being able to use any of the data on it is not worth not being able to use the navigation ever again.
