Z2 opens for CD, but won't accept CD

My Z2 is about a year old. Months ago I had a problem where if I listen to FM or Music Library while I am driving, then try to insert a CD, the tray will come down, but it won't let me insert a CD. Only if I turn off and restart the engine will it accept the CD.

I thought I resolved this problem by doing all the level resets, wiping out all the 50 or so CD's I had in the music library and other memory. It seemed to work, but I was on a trip just recently showing off my bitchin Avic Z2 to my buddies and sure enough it woudn't accept the CD unless I pulled over and restarted the engine.

Anybody else ever had a problem like this?? And if so, how did you resolve it? I can't really figure out what triggers making it not work.

Thanks for any help - Bob

P.S. The trip was to the Kern River in California, about a 4 hour drive from where I live - and I did an experiment which the others thought was risky - I relied COMPLETELY on the hottie talking in the nav system to get us there. (Of course we had maps for backup - but never needed them).

She was right on the money and got us there with no problem through a LOT of freeway changes, always making the best choice. Only one thing that cracked us up, but it wasn't "her" fault, the road wound through the mountains and made some really sharp switchback hairpin turns, and at some point we were probably going North instead of South, and she told us to make a U turn as soon as possible. Oh well, can't really blame that one on "her".

Sounds like the mechanism/motor that pulls in the CD disc is faulty. You may have to take it in to Pioneer for service.

Thanks for your response dj.. It seems lke it must be a software problem as opposed to a mechanical problem. It works every time if I pull over and turn off the ignition and turn it back on. It seems to not work if I have listened to anything else first, like FM or Music Library. I even tried turning Source Off first, but no go. Still have to pull over and turn off ignition and restart.

Since I have most of my CD's already loaded on the Music Library I rarely put new CD's in. On this trip my buddy brought some CD's to listen to - and sure enough, we had to exit freeway in a bad part of town, pull over, turn off ignition, and restart to make it accept the CD. After that it worked every time for a 4 hour trip. (We didn't use FM or anything else inbetween).

It is not the biggest inconvenience for me since I might go 2 months without loading a new CD in, and usually I can pull over easily and restart. It is a BIG hassle for me to tear up my dash and remove the unit to send it to Pioneer. I was hoping for some easy fix if others have had the same problem.

I'll probably just live with the problem until I decide to buy a new Nav system years from now. (Maybe not Pioneer next time).

Really? I would check all your wires and grounds, something is causing your z unit to not accept cds.

I would also check your screen to see if its hitting or getting caught on something, maybe thats tricking your unit to think its still in the process of opening so its not accepting the CD disc. IDK, keep us updated and good luck.

Yeah I thought the same thing, that maybe sometimes the tray is not coming all the way down, but it is. I can't help but think something gets reset when I turn off and restart the ignition because when it doesn't work, and I do that, it woks 100% of the time. Maybe kinda like a computer reboot of some sort.

Almost makes me want to put a swith on whichever wires are energized when I turn the ignition back on, I could hit the switch off and on without pulling over and turning the ignition off and on. Just kidding - I would throw it in the air and use it for skeet practice before I did that. Did that with a JVC boom box years ago when the CD stopped working... Hung it from a tree in the desert and blasted it into submission with a 12 guage. And no, I didn't try and take it back to the store for warranty after :P
