I'm assuming that I should see a difference in the daytime/nighttime modes? Both of them look the same to me. At night, my NAV illuminates my whole face. What do I need to look for?

is your parking light wire connected to your radio?

Make sure that the orange illumination wire with the white stripe coming off the back of the head unit is connected to one in your car which may or may not be orange.

that is my problem too. I would love to have the same day/night mode switch automatically, like it does in the Garmin. I wonder if the F-series has that feature....

Make sure you illumination wire is hooked up properly.

Make sure your DAY/NIGHT mode is set to NIGHT to allow it to switch automatically.

Mine works just fine. In the video settings you can control the brightness of both the DAY and NIGHT MODE.

In Night Mode all the GREEN on the MAPS turn to GREY .... and of course the display dims ...
