I got my z3 installed yesterday, and my installer said he did what he usually does to bypass the z series but he said he had only done it for older units. See attached picture for the message i get when starting the unit. Would I get this message if he did the old bypass? Should I give him this link? http://www.sminntech.com/z1flash.html#newbypass or is there something else i should tell him?

Your installer did not do the bypass correctly. It appears that he did not move the mute wire to the correct location in connector 2, or did not ground it at all.

Print the bypass instructions and take it back to him.

thanks for the quick replies... ok i sent him the instructions but he promises me that this is exactly what he did... is there anything else that might need to be done?

No. He will need to make sure that the wire he moved is SECURELY attached to the connector. If the yellow/black wire that was moved is not properly grounded, then you will get the error in your photo above.

No other cause...

ok, after doing some more searching, and since my installer told me he did the correct bypass, i tried hitting the reset button and it worked. i guess he didnt kno u had to do that or forgot... but its all bypassed now...

my next question - speed pulse in connection info says 0.. if i have him connect that will it break the bypass? and is it even important?

connecting speed wire is recommended.

it won't ruin the bypass?

No.

ARGH! my happiness didn't last too long... after a few more miles of driving around i got the parking break error message...

Have your installer check the connections to make sure the pin is completely seated in the connector...

From everything I read on this thread, it appears to be an installation problem. Connecting the speed sensor wire will not effect the bypass. Connecting the wire will give you more precise nav functionality. Uses vehicle speed and satellite positioning to improve nav.

As a rule of thumb, if possible, I always watch and supervise the install process from start to finish and check everything before leaving the shop.

Take it back. Explain the bypass and have them check their work.

FYI.

thanks everybody... seems to be working... for now.

even though this thing has like 3 year old hardware it's a sweet unit!

i get this same message .. i know the wire is firmly in there

what is weird, when i click it, i can use the functions as though the bypass is working fine.

it started up a week or so after having the unit installed with the bypass done

My installer has gone over the bypass and after checking it assures me that there is a disk necessary to complete the bypass. Much what has been exxperienced already, if I reset it only lasts for a few miles before I get locked out.

Does anyone knopw about the disk needed for this.

Do you have a Z1, Z2, or Z3? That would make a difference...

I also heard that a download was needed for my z3.I have done the bypass and hit reset---still not working for any length of time!

If you have a Z3 hard drive, then you do NOT need any other software or cd installed. the bypass is not done correctly. The problem is with the wire that needs to be moved to the empty slot in connector 2. It is 1. in the wrong slot, 2. not seated properly, or 3. not grounded. I assure you that is the problem...

Mine did the same thing. I actually just reset it and now it isn't displaying that anymore... hopefully it will last like this

I just had the bypass "installed" on my Z1 with Z3 HDD. Seems to be working fine.
