Hello everyone, this is my first post and I wanted to ask a question to the resident experts. I am about to purchase the AVIC Z3. I actually had it narrowed down to that or the JVC KW NX7000. Anyhow, Just a quick question, does the Pioneer show you the points of interest icons like the JVC unit does. i.e the Mcdonalds Arches or the Shell gas station sign. I attached a link that has a picture of what I am talking about. The picture is at the bottom of the page. Well thanks in advance!

here you go... i guess i was kinda bored... and this is my least favorite view on the z3.... there's a much cooler 3d view but i wasnt about to drive to a mcdonalds for you.

if you really wanted to, you could even take a picture of your favorite burger at mcdonalds, and then save your favorite mickeydeeze location to your address book and assign the picture you took to that location... then whenever your within approx 1/4 mile of that mcdonalds up pops your picture

Thanks Defjux! Allthough I dont like Mcdonalds that much, it was just a prominent example from the other picture. lol Thank you for taking the time to do that though.

Cool guys thanks for the input. I went ahead and ordered mine today. I ordered the Z3 and the Ipod adapter for it. It should be here next week sometime. Anyhow thanks again everyone.

Are you installing it yourself?

Posted Oct 10, 2008 · 23:36 UTC#12

I planned on giving it a try... Any advice??

Posted Oct 10, 2008 · 23:47 UTC#13

What are you installing it in? I installed mine, and it slid right in to a CX-7.

I found this 12x12x3/16 Black ABS at the local electronics store (not RS) that came in very handy. I was able to cut it with a router and shape it with a rasp.

remember to get the wiring harrness adapter......

I am going to "attempt" to install it in a 2008 Nissan Titan. I ordered the wiring harness and the dash kit, allthough I dont think I need it as I have a base model Titan and like yours it should just be able to slide right in but we will see. I have never soldered anything though so I may have to practice on some spare wiring first. I dont think I will have any problems, it may just take a little while longer than a seasoned installer would take but thats okay, gotta learn sometime plus it will save about 200 bucks.

Well. I installed it today. Looks good. The metra kit that I ordered with it didnt work out to well for me but I was able to use the equipment that was supplied with the Z3 and it worked out close to perfectly. I do have a slight rattle though so I need to work that out. I also installed the Ipod Control Module with it as well, allthough I placed it in the glove compartment until I can find a good spot to mount it under the dash. Anyhow thanks for the advice you guys gave me before I began the installation.

Oh the install was fairly smooth considering all the components involved but if anyone plans on installing one of these, just take your time and everything will come together just right.

Glad to hear that things went smooth. Congratulations!

I recently upgraded my Z1 to a Z3 with the HDD update, and I've noticed a big difference in the way the software pronounces words of Spanish origin. Granted, some cities & street names are supposed to be pronounced the Spanish way (La Jolla is pronounced with an H, for example), but some are not:

My Z3 now says:

Los Ang-Hay-Lez instead of Los An-Gel-Ess,

Son-ta Mon-Ee-Ka instead of San-ta Mon-I-Ka,

Son Di-Ay-Go instead of San Di-Ay-Go.

As if that's not bad enough, the voice navigation seems to require Spanish-sounding pronunciations too.

I called Pioneer, and they say that their Z3's pronounce all words in North American English. That is, they were no help. Is anyone else's Z3 going south of the border?

Hi - I'm also very new to this forum. I was also looking at this JVC NX7000 unit vs the AVIC Z3 - crutchfield reviews were very negative on the AVIC Z3 and F series, so I've been really turned away. So I was thus looking at the JVC unit. It had the features I wanted, full 7" screen, SD card slot, plays all formats and has a key Nav feature I like, it shows lanes and which lane you should be in for an upcoming intersection. Does the Z3 do this as well?? and has Pioneer fixed the Z3 problems, particularily the boot up time? It would really suck to go start my car, and put in reverse to back out of a parking spot and by the time I back out, the unit hasn't booted so I can see my rearview camera!! that seems like a HUGE deal breaker for me...

Thanks all!!!!

Only the F Series has the slow boot times. The Z's backup camera and music start almost immediatly, and the NAV is ready in about 30 seconds.

The Z does also show lane info on highways and interstates. I also shows you the direction and distance for the next 2 turns if they are fairly close to each other.

wow - nice - thanks for the quick response... Are there any known issues with the Z3? How does the bluetooth work and sound? I'm just really trying to justify blowing so much $$$$ on this unit...I'd expect to get something tested and flawless for that kind of price...esp since the JVC unit is like $700-$800 cheaper!!! just makes me nervous.... :?

I am really happy with my Z overall. The BT works well for some and not so well for others. I am one that it does not sound very good. It's good for me, but the person that I am talking to thinks I sound far away. It could also be the placement of my mic.

If you are concerned about the money difference, just pick up a used or refurb Z1 or Z2 and upgrade it to a Z3 for free (files available in the forum) or very cheaply (preconfigured HDD replacement).

Posted Oct 31, 2008 · 01:28 UTC#23

so the avic-z1 z2 and z3 are physically the same?? do they have the same firmware, or is that what is upgraded on here??

wow, kinda like a no brainer then to get a z1 for cheap and upgrade on here to a z3..

Posted Oct 31, 2008 · 01:31 UTC#24

They are all the same hardware. The upgraded Z3 image contains the Z3 firmware (which writes to the Z at first boot), the new maps, POI, etc. There is NO difference between a Z1 or Z2 with a Z3 imaged hard drive, and a factory new Z3 except the warrenty :)

Just a quick search on ebay and I have found brand new Z2 (not refurb) for $999 plus $8.49 shipping with good feedback...

Also found a new refurb Z2 for $799 with free shipping and 100% positive feedback..

Now the Avic Z becomes much less expensive than that JVC :)
