Has anyone ever seen this work? Pg 59 of the manual claims that a box will appear on the screen notifying of a new SMS

i've used a HTC Wing/Herald and an Iphone and have never seen this work. Is there an option to be enabled?

Yep. That robotic chicks voice also gives a verbal announcement in addition to the on-screen notification

i wonder what the feature is coined as... googlin for "iphone sms tts" brings up hits that don't pertain to us. but rather apps that'll convert the sms to tts on the iphone platform.

hehehe

This feature doesn't work with the iPhone (I'm not sure about HTC), if I had to guess only Moto and Nokia phones are supported based on anecdotal evidence.
