I ordered a small rear view camera. i decided not to use pioneers just because the thing is too big. I have an 04 silverado and i want to mount the camera either in teh tailgate handle bezel or on that plastic tailgate protector on top. My question for all you people( especially chevy people) is has anyone done this or at least seen or heard or this being done? I dont think its gunna be too hard but its always nice to follow someones elses experience.

btw... i still love the z1

You should check out the Avalanche forum http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php there are a bunch of people that have done what your looking for. I drilled out my tag and put my cam in there

macalanche is right. There's a bunch of folks over in the Avalanche forums who've done this.

I've seen double camera installs done with one in the handle bezel and the other in the little niche above the tow bar in the tow hitch. I fabricated an aluminum face plate and put my rear view camera in that niche too. It's great for backing up to a trailer hitch. In the trucks where I've seen it in the tailgate handle bezel, the camera is often aimed slightly down so the field of view includes the trailer hitch; again to ease backing up to a trailer.

Something to consider... I don't know about the Silverado, but the Avalanche tailgate is mostly composite materials held together with a lot of very sticky double sided tape. Opening it up to install stuff like this is a MAJOR PITA! However, that being said, it's entirely possible to do with enough time and determination to "get er done"!

well thats good news. I do tow things and thats why i didnt want to mount the camera too low. But since i tow things i didnt want to mount it with no view of the hitch or at least close to the hitch

I made an aluminum mount that fits right in the niche of the trailer hitch. It is a Laser cut aluminum tab, I am making a few extra PM for details.
