Thinking of upgrading from the D1 to the Z1

My bigest question is since my D1 is already installed, is the harness for the D1 and Z1 the same?

It would be nice to just swap out units.

If it will work I have the D1 wired so that it thinks the parking brake is always set. Will this effect the Z1?

And finally what do you guys and gals think if the new iopd interface unit? I absolutly hated the first one an was thinking of upgrading this also.

I upgraded from the D1 to the Z1. Here is why:

10 GB hard drive for music
Bluetooth
Built in DVD
Built in voice recog.
Bigger screen
Enhanced SIRIUS software (even with the SIR-PNR1)

Although I do not have the ipod I imagine it is much better, especially if you have the new ipod adapter.

The ipod "interface" is great. It functions exactly like the real ipod. But the interface is a bit slow. Navigation though my 100's of artists or 1000's of songs would take you days to navigate with the pioneer interface.... just due to it's speed. As long as you limit your play lists to a couple dozen or so and use those, it's very nice.

The difference between the old ipod interface box and the new ii interface box is the connector only. No change with the internals or software.

I doubt everything is the same, but not having one I can't tell you for absolute, you might get away with just the power/speaker connections.

That would be an easy install. I know some manufacturers do keep the connectors the same over time, you might get lucky.

Yes, you will have problems if you try to do something you shouldn't while driving. If you put in a DVD while parked, and start watching it. It will work cause the parking brake is grounded (thinks your parking brake is on). But when you start moving the GPS and gyro sensors will notice you are moving and it will kill the video and then pop up a warning about your parking brake not being connected correctly. Then every time you power on the unit, it will pop this warning up till you reset the unit. It will come back again if you "piss it off again" (by doing something you shoudln't while moving).

Sorry I forgot. No. The harness is not the same. That is the first thing I noticed when switching units.

DAMN! I wish it was going to be just a plug and play. Oh well nothing can be too easy. I just dont know if I can justify spending almost double that of the D1 for the Z1.

Now that I have been thinking about it for a while, I just dont think its feasable for me to spend all that money and sepnd the time reinstalling a new unit just for the new features.

Plus I just got back from a deployment so I only have been able to enjoy the D1 for a few weeks even though I have had it for like 7 months.

Please change my mind for me!!

I upgraded from the D1 to the Z1. The harnesses are NOT the same. However, the Z1 is LESS complicated than the D1, so, if you are car stereo savvy at all, it's pretty easy to figure out. I swapped my units (beginning to end) in about 1 1/2 hrs. that included slightly adjusting my face plate to allow the screen to open. I also left the D1 GPS antenna and the reverse sensing wire in, so I didn't have to reroute. If you have any questions, email me.
