Why do I need to ground the 2 wires?

Hi

I been reading the pages and I have a basic question. I have a AVIC-Z2 and all I did to watch DVDs and use my GPS while driving was to ground the light green lead. Do I have something wrong with my unit or am I just lucky? I have the news code and map upgrades.

Thanks

Joe

The unit will eventually lock you out. The mute wire prevents the unit from knowing when you're in motion therefore preventing the bypassing from locking out. It's a fact that they both have to be grounded.

its funny, I have over 20K miles on the unit and its never locked.

See why I am confused.....

That's a rare case that it's managed to stay bypassed that long, but it will lock you out, my friend. My advice to you would be leave it alone for now, and when it happens, just take it out and do the 2 wire.

merchjo,

Did you buy your Z new or used?

That kills my thought. I was thinking that the previous owner may have moved the 2nd wire to the correct location in connector 2, and just grounded it at the avic z harness (ie the black gound wire, or the lt green p-brake wire)...

I thought that too but it's kind of hard to miss the mute wire being grounded when installing. It's just a rare case of luck with this until it locks out.
