just got through updating my z1 to z3 but got a small problem. all things went well but now that i have it done and installed the maps seem to be in california and theres no real recognition of where i am. any ideas?

Have you given it sufficient time to acquire GPS signal ( also check the number of satelites it "sees", in the hardware menu. )

now, after several random reboots, its giving me a hdd error with a black screen

Reimage the drive with Z3 again.

I was updating my z1 into a z3. I can read the drive using my computer but when i put the drive in my avic it does nothing blank screen i have redone it 6 times still not working and downloaded z3 image about 4 times

Im using the instructions in the sticky z1 to z3. Downloaded all the virgin z3 files and restored them to the hard drive using acronis.

Did you restore all 4 partitions and the MBR at the same time and use the default options?

I think so but never used the MBR Must mean master boot record. I'm a dumb a$$. Maybe that is my problem.

I reloaded the drive again but the avic will not do anything blank screen it will not even lock the drive
